Next topic: How about a 08 RX 350 newbie doing a 60,000 mile with a local mechanic. I can get all the Lexus parts much cheaper. Can a local guy do a brake fluid replacement and air filter change? (Heck, can I do the air filter change myself?)

I`m not familiar with the 350`s layout. But I dont see why you couldn`t change the air filter yourself. As for the brake fluid, just make sure it`s the Toyota stuff.

RX350 requires a paper filter.

I will absolutely make sure that it's Toyota stuff. The thing is, I don't know the first thing about changing these things. Any tutorials?

If I'm not mistaken, the 350 changed to a timing chain instead of a belt. That removes one major part of servicing that engine.

Well this is how I do it. If I want to service something myself at home, with no lift etc. And I `m not sure/or want to tackle it,to the shop it goes. luckily I have a very good Lexus dealership. I know my limitations for doing maintenance at home. If your not sure of your limitations,or your thinking I dont know if i can do this,...take it in. Or try it,that way you will learn your limitations. What really stinks is,if you try it,and cant do it,then it get`s towed as well. but,if your successful, then you know it was done right. A lot depends on how Mechanicly inclined you are.I probably confused you more than anything I guess. Just make sure you have a second vehicle in case of a mistake.

honestly, I think I can handle the air filter change myself, if someone could perhaps give me a hint as to where it is, and how to access it. I'm guessing it's probably a two minute, no tool sort of deal.

The Cabin Filter is easy, manual should show how. Is the air filter location same in 330 vs 350?

[QUOTE=howdybob22;5902903]
"but to call an entire line of Toyota V6 as sludge maker, nuclear reactor etc. is just insane especially when saying that it can be prevented with proper maintenance - huh."

I know we are done with this topic -but I just found that line funny. nuclear reactor is just a mechanic joke.

wow..we really luv our lexus here...lol

Cabin Filter - done. Actually did it myself a few weeks ago with the Denso OEM filter. Took two minutes, no tools. Total cost $17. (I was once charged $90 by a Toyota dealer for that. 45 for the filter, and 45 for labor. Unbelievable.)

Engine Air Filter - Figured out where it is this afternoon. Will have mechanic help me with it at 60K.

Brake fluid replacement - Here is the only remaining question for me regarding the 60K service. Is this item, as specified in the 60K service, a total purge of the entire brake system, complete with total evacuation of brake lines/cylinder, pumping brakes, refilling and pumping to purge of air bubbles? That's the impression I got. But my local mechanic seems to think that it is a simple draining of the reservoir and refilling. No involved pumping, etc... I actually think that the more complete involved way is what is required at the 60K.

Any experts here know what's called for in the 60K brake service on an 08 RX350?

I may just have the local mechanic do everything else under the 60K, and then have my local Lexus dealership do ONLY the brake service.

Just a reminder, Oreilly's has a buy 1 get 1 free gallon of Valvoline SynPower synthetic. And the gallon is on sale @ $19.99 through 11/23. Rebate forms in the store.

Buy 1, get 1 free. Buy 2, get 2 free. $40 for 4 gallons, $10/gallon, $2.50/QT. Synthetic oil for the price of Dino. Can not beat that!

Thanks BITOG!

Got my 4 qts. Rebate is going to mail out tomorrow.
