Whenever I the dealer changes the oil on my RX330, they use 7 quarts of 30 weight synthetic oil and one quart of 5W-30 synthetic....
I will ask the dealer why the next time I bring the car in, but I just wondered whether anyone else knows the reason why? (My dealership is Coliseum Lexus).

First off, 8 quarts is more than the capacity of oil for the RX330. The oil capacity with a new filter when doing an oil change is 4.7 litres. Secondly, I can think of no reason why they wouldn't use 5w30 for the entire oil change. If I were you, I'd be checking the invoice carefully (are you sure it wasn't eight half quarts?) and questioning the dealer more carefully as to why they are using a single weight oil (as per the owner's manual, 5w30 is recommended).

The dealers don't use oil from plastic quart bottles. They have bulk storage of lubricants that is delivered directly to each service bay via pressurized hose. There is a meter that the service tech monitors to deliver the correct amount of oil to whatever vehicle is serviced.

You have been given good advice. Don't assume that the dealer is doing things right. I would suggest that the manufacturer knows better than the dealer how to maintain your car (talking about straight viscosity versus the 5w-30). Check your invoice because, if you have a 5 quart oil system, 8 quarts of oil would cause serious foaming and significant engine damage.

RX330, exactly 5 QTS. No more, no less. Read the manual.

Betsy: your dealer is overcharging you for oil by unnecessarily overfilling it.
what the engine needs is ONLY 5 quarts! Anything more than that is puzzling. With the RX, I don't see a reason why you or someone in your family cannot change it yourself. It is tall ENOUGH to lie under the hood without the need for ramps or lojacks. I do it lying my back on a piece of paper cardboard.

Probably the parts department billed the different type of oil on your invoice by accident. If that happens every time, something is really fishy, bring all receipts and talk to the manager, as someone is doing something he is not supposed to.

Good advice, but this thread is over three years old and I don't think Betsy posts here anymore.
