hate to pop open an old thread... nah, no I don't.
I accidentally ran my 2009 RX-350 on regular for 3 years when I noticed the "Premium Fuel Only" sticker on the inside of the filler door. I'd always stood on the opposite side of it and just never saw it. I never heard any pings, the computer never saw any problems. I got about 22.5 miles per gallon average consistently. I ran premium in it when the fuel station I use had something wrong with their pumps and I got... 22-23.5 mpg. I ran premium for about 5 months, no real change in the car just my bill. Now that gas is $4.65 for premium and $4.00 for regular, that's about a $11-12 difference per tank.
If it even pinged a little I'd run premium, not worth the damage... I don't get on the accelerator too much, maybe that's the difference.

If you choose to use 87 only use top tier gas like Shell, BP, etc and add a fuel cleaner every oil change like Techron. Your engine will appreciate the kind gesture.
As a preference I like the way the car performs with higher grade gas to me its worth the few cents more in my area. We can debate this for weeks on whats recommended vs on really whats better for your $50k+ vehicle so I use nothing less than 89.
Just my 2cents...

Since this thread came back to life, I thought I would report in.
Just turned 305,000 miles on our 2004 RX330 using 85 octane (Colorado, which equates to 87 elsewhere).
Vehicle is running great.
