defeat the stability control
It was really slippery yesterday, and I was stuck on a hill going up. I was stuck because the stability control kicked in an killed the engine at the bottom.
Purely by accident, I started pumping the gas pedal very aggressively, off to full. And the engine started putting power to the wheels without the stabiliity control overriding it. It was enough to get me going again.
Later I had another spot where the stability control started kicking in, and I reverted to pumping the gas pedal, and it kept it from coming on.
So, if you are stuck somewhere, try pumping your gas pedal. It seems to work.

There is an override button on the bottom of the dash just below the steering wheel on the ignition side. PITA to get too when you're going around a corner, but if you're in snow, it may be worth de-activating until you are on a better surface., I've not tried it, but am not happy when the engine is cut as I'm just rounding a normal corner. The VSC beeps about 3 times then the power dies. maybe someone else has experience with this control?

The override button below the dash is only found on front-wheel drive models.
In my experience constant, medium throttle pressure is the best way to treat the car to use traction control to your advantage. It will allow wheels to spin if it senses that you are not making progress. It would be nice for it to be easily defeatable but in my experience it really doesn't get in the way much when driven properly.
