My Wife's 2008 RX350 was a snap to change the DVD as BeeDub described it. The difference is our local Lexus Dealer in NJ wanted $200 to push the damn button. I did it myself and took my wife out to dinner. FWIW the Garmin 1490T in My Avalon is 10x better.

The Lexus NAV is a joke. Why are we required to annually fork over so much $$ for a sub-standard NAV system.

Just bought a 2007 RX400h. My map version is 6.1. Not sure if it's necessary to wait until 11.1 comes out in the fall. If I decide to get the 10.1, where would you recommend getting it? I have never bought anything on eBay and irontoad.com doesn't carry the DVDs. Any suggestions? Dealer said with DVD and install it would be about $400.

Does the dvd have to stay in the vehicle? I'm still trying to decide whether to get the cd or the Garmin 1490 LMT, they have free lifetime updates and weather for about the same price.

Yes, the DVD stays in the vehicle to retrieve map information.

If you did not already have a NAV unit, the Garmin would not be a bad way to go. I travel quite a bit, however, it is rare I am actively using my Garmin. I either know where I am going or am happy to just wing it.

But, I don't have an iPhone/Smartphone. Don't you watch TV? They can track your every movement when you carry one of those.

obviously the phone navigations and Garmin nav systems are better, smaller, easily updatable ( usually free update) the newer ones have traffic alerts and etc. but for those who have the Nave in the car its kind of redundant to get a Garmin so updating the maps is the option we have to go with

it is expensive and i think car companies should work with us the consumer a bit more to make this more affordable and convenient but that would cut into their profit margin so they are not going to do it. In about 3-5 years from now cars will be like smart phones and will have a web nav, and other features the smart phones have now ( its in development
