What kind of AWD is it?

Call it whatever you want, but it cuts fuel to the engine if it detects a slide, which will dampen the effectiveness of the viscous center differential. This worried me a great deal before my first trip to the snow, due to the fact that if the rear end steps out while making a turn in the snow you want to maintain gentle throttle. Cutting the throttle in this situation will make the back end come all the way around. I had the chance to check this dynamic out in an empty lot after a day on the slopes and was pleasantly surprised that the system allows a certain amount of rear slide in snow mode.

Wheel spin vs. getting stuck
I suggest you give your manual a thorough read. When you're stuck, you need to disable the traction control:
"If your wheels get stuck in a ditch when you are driving on a severe off road and sand, turn off the traction control system. This system that controls engine performance interferes with the process of freeing your wheels."

I will have to get my manual out again, as I think I have an ECT or some such button, as I have had a loss of power when I open the throttle to get moving in slippery snow....it sounds like to me the the engine rpms are being reduced by the computer to avoid wheel spin....but I got no power to get going.
