Question Rear Passenger Window Air Buffeting Issue

If you drive at about 55 mph with the rear passener window down and all the other windows up, the wind buffeting inside the car will actually hurt your ears and your head. Things are ok up to about 45 mph. At any speed over that, the buffeting inside the car is really bad. It is my wifes car. This is our third RX and we have had it since December of 2008. I seldom drive the car. This did not become an issue until we got a dog.

Anybody else faced this problem?

Thanks,

Bob in Fresno

Bob, that 'helicoptering' issue happens in about every new car and in every Lexus I've owned (not specific to the RX). The simple solution is to crack another window in the car, even the opposite rear window.

Examples:

Good explanatory post from thread above

A car at speed will cause an air stream, more so at the side rear window. That air stream creates a low pressure zone where it will draw the air from inside the car to the outside air stream. As more and more air is being drawn out, at some point the air pressure inside the car actually becomes lower than the outside air pressure and a rush of air enters the car. This cycle repeats itself and the air moving in and out of the car is what cause the helicopter noise that you hear.

Thanks. At my next service I am going to have them fix the rear drivers side window that has never worked with the drivers side control buttuns. For the time being I will roll both back windows down before I take off. That should keep both my ears and the dog happy.
