'05 RX 330 highway rattle - wheel bearing?
#16
From where I sit in Ohio, the winter hasn't been too hard on my fix...when you consider it is 25 or 50 cents worth of foam that can be applied in a minute or so...pretty economical. Plus, since it was a 5 or 10 foot roll, it's gonna last a while, even if I have to replace it. So far, the foam has lasted all winter. I'll check it when I replace my rear brakes this spring. If need be, I'll cut another chunk and stick it on. Another advantage was that I didn't have to drop the shield, although I had had it off once before. There was enough flex in it to just bend it slightly and apply the foam tape. Probably why it bounces on the bottom of the body anyway!

The rattle is gone!! I bought some foam tape but the problem was that someone removed the cover over the oil tank and I either had to replace the whole shield, or have it removed. I chose the latter, although I have retained the shield and hardware, and was advised to have it re-installed each winter to protect the underbody from our MA winter roads. Apparently only luxury and sports cars have those shields, and as I do no off-roading or speed 80+, was told it is okay to remove it. Any opinions?
Although there appeared to be another rattle from the open (un-bolted) end of the shield covering the gas tank, foam tape would not close it as it was not thick enough, so we left as is, and apparently did not contribute to the rattle, anyway.
.... I had wondered why the rattle only started after I went back to mechanic when I experienced a 4 quart leak after a recent oil change. The same mechanic who mis-installed the filter (and lied about it), tore off the oil tank shield when cleaning up his oil mess, and did not replace the shield... hence causing the rattle. His solution to fix the rattle? .... 'you have a rusted resonator - that will be $2k!!' He'll never touch my car again. Muffler shop says resonator is just fine.
