RX350 tuneup by dealer or independent shop?
It's time for a tuneup I think, as my car is starting to sputter. Also, it's time for my 60,000 service. I have already had the oil changed by the dealership but told them I'd come back for the rest of the service. They wanted over $400.00 that I didn't have at the moment. That seems extremely high! I read in the manual what all is included in 60,000 checkup. (Am I buying dinner for everyone too?) My questions are: What is the cost of a Dealership TUNE UP? It's not listed on the website and I don't really want to call them. They can be pushy at times. The tuneup is NOT included in the 60,000 checkup. Is it really that important that the dealership do do the 60,000 service and tuneup? A tune up is a tuneup, yes? I don't know if I can find it cheaper. I'm new to this forum but it appears that you all know so much more than I. So what do you think. Help me decide. Thank you.

A tune-up is not part of routine Lexus maintenance. Even the spark plugs are not replaced until 120,000 miles. If you are experiencing problems (sputter) you need to have Lexus check the vehicle out and correct the problem.

Agree, what tune up? Gone were the days. Check your manual for recommended service.
SPUTTER? What is it exactly?

If you are not happy with your dealer you might want to try another. In the CL Vendor section here many of us deal online with Sewell for parts, which is in Dallas, and many have been happy with the service they received when their vehicle was serviced by the shop itself as noted by word of their comments here online.

If that is not possible, perhaps a different service advisor.
As the others have noted your RX requires premium fuel, nothing less, and there is little in the way of a tune-up required. If hesitating, it should be covered under warranty assuming every is up-to-date on your service needs to include air filter, etc.

I really appreciate all the responses. I was afraid ya'll were going to say "check with dealer" on the sputtering. I DO use Premium Gas, but one of you said I might have gotten some bad gas. That could be the case as it doesn't sputter all the time, maybe twice in the last 2 weeks. So, I will check with dealer on that issue. By the way, the Lexus folks here are extremely nice and professional. I didn't mean to throw a negative light on them. I just merely think their prices are too high. Yes, I can use a computer in the plush waiting room, have soft drinks and a loner car along with a carwash. I appreciate it, but I don't want to be paying for that! Back to my point of doing things by myself. Are the filters (AC and air) hard to get to so that I can just reach in there and turn or pull something? As you all have probably deduced...I don't know much about cars, but I'm trying to learn. So, after you've had your chuckle here...ha ha please reply. Thanks so much!

Many Lexus owners, myself included use the local Toyota dealer for service. I only use Lexus for warranty work. Toyota work is about 40% - 50% less than Lexus. Also you should enter any maintenance you have performed on the vehicle at the Lexus website. This website also has the complete service history of the vehicle, any warranty work, TSB's, recalls and more. Link below:

Thanks so much Carver and Rainbird. I used Davenports on Inwood Rd when I lived in Dallas. I have been in North Arlington for a year. Now, the Toyota dealership.... that's a good idea. Thanks Rainbird. and thanks for reminding me that I can enter the work done on the Lexus website. Carver, would you happen to know of a GOOD Toyota dealership close to Cooper and 30? I'm in Rolling Hills. Gotta go...I think we are getting ready to have a Tornado!

Man, it just passed here but there is another one coming. I've lived here 30 years and this is the first time weather has made me nervous.
Crap, just issued a tornado warning and the siren went off! Don't know nuthin' bout no Ty-yo-ta dealers over there, bye!
