We can never truly understand our kids' generation as they will be same with their kids. This social network is a most recent phenomenah, but with the Internet, it was going to happen. It is just the way it is. Hopefully the wrong doers do not get ahead of the game.

I know, right? What happened to giving your kid a piece of crap as a first car. Like my beautiful 1982 Ford Escort that was a lovely shade of beige!

My 76 Pontiac: left me stranded 3x, had all sorts of other issues and no telling what would have happened if I'd crashed.

Ok. Sorry. I was given $500 and I had to come up with the other $500. But, paid $1000 for it, drove it 2 years, wrecked it, and still sold it for $600. So not too bad.

it's good your made a good presents for her.
But from experience, I would not do that again. Because, it was about 3-4 years ago, we had 04' VW Passat in very good condition,so we gave to our child. My child was very happy with this present and had a good grades and all ect. But then something happened after 3-4 months, grades went down, almost all the time later to school, driving at night, coming home later evening like around 11-12 pm, well to keep a story short, I got call from school, saying my child is not going finish this grade more likely, if will continue skip or late to school. No, child (i don't want identify he/she) didn't drink and didn't do drugs, but I think the easy thing comes made to think life is good and everything can be accomplished easy.
Well me and wife sold a car and our child didn't have a car for year or something until child has invest own money for car. Yes we helped to buy in the end, but it was several thousand dollars car only.
Yes child was going to school on bus like everyone else.
Well in the end almost 4 years later, it had encouraged our child to work hard, got the priorities straight out and growing better person.
We had learned a lesson, no free gift such cars to teenage people. We have another two children, (not yet teenager) but will be one day.And they will get their cars after they have earned money for this buy. I think half/ half will be a good start.

In the end may be me and my were wrong or right. Time will tell.

she still has a curfew, she still has to keep her grades at A-B level, she still has to go to church, and she still has to abide by our rules.

It's absolutely right, and a reason car was sold soon as all rules were not obeyed.

See, the problem is they have a lot friends, some friends don't have car, so they are driving around between them, between house to find a spot where they can get together(because some parents want to rest a little, but not see a bunch tees come and go all the time), then later night, they are started driving them to home. It takes a lot time(because our state allowed only two teens in the car at same time). So the end the person whom have a car, coming to home later and no time to do home work. Believe me I went thru it's almost impossible to argue with out words fight. All teens are same, do same mistakes, same accidents, same speed tickets and so on. I'm not talking yet about insurance cost for expensive and sports cars.
It's not just me, it is/was situation our friends teens. The only time can teach them and nothing else.

Not sure if it is the same today as it was in my day, but not all situations have to turn out the same. Sure teens will be teens and I was no different. However, I had a job while I was in HS, played sports and kept my grades up. All this while taking care of my car, making the payments for insurance, gas and proper maintenance. Folks paid for most of the car. Granted, it was not a Lexus, but it was new and I did OK. Finished in the top percent of my class and got into college no problems.

It's a good when your parents can afford to pay for brand new car.

I have different perspective on this. In my opinion, person should earned money for such things, it's a still privilege to drive a car. USA has a lot opportunities for young people. Just one summer of hard work can bring you a good $5-6 thousand car. We are lucky living such a good and wealthy country. So it's possible to earn and save money. Young people should not have everything, as it's granted.
But it's just me, I came from where life is hard and where a lot people surviving.
