Default Navigation 12.1

New to forum and great information here as I have been a lurker for a while.

Do have questions.

Have an 2008 RX350 and have never updated the navigation. Got a postcard in mail that the 12.1 is available. Looks like my model is a Gen 5. I am planning on buying and installing the DVDs myself.

My questions are:

Is there a firmware update needed going from 9.1 to 12.1?
If so, is it automatic when the DVDs are installed?

Other threads keep saying to use a site sponsor, Sewell, to buy and get a discount. However, I don't see a discount code anywhere and their "reduced" price on their website is the MSRP. Am I missing something here?

Thanks

Chris

Welcome to Club Lexus, thx10.

There is no firmware to upgrade. By just swapping the discs in the trunk area, instructions can be found elsewhere here at Club Lexus, is all you need to do. No need to let a dealership take your money for such an easy task. Your display will not look any different. Will still be a Gen 5. The only change is that the maps will be updated. If that is all you care to do then you will be fine.

Regarding Sewell, you need to first create an account. During this process you will see a section at the bottom titled Forum Membership Information (Optional). Just be sure to select Club Lexus. Then, when you are logged in you will see the updated prices. Not everything is cheaper but many things are. If you have something added to your basket before logging in you will not see the updated price. You need to remove those items from your basket and add them back while logged into your account.

I purchased the most resent update this spring on Kijiji for 35.00. Easy to load, The only thing I had to do was change location to my present area on the screen. But as the e-mail above states there is no difference in the screens quality or performance. I was hoping they would be more general area mapped on the software. We have a hunt camp up in Northern ontario and when i hit the logging roads to get there my Nav screen goes white indicating area not mapped out. The newer NAV software shows mostly newer roads and obviously so.I have a GPS hand held that shows everything including snowmobile/atv trails and I use that when i'm up there Jamie

Not only are the maps updated, but the POI information (restaurants, motels, gas stations, banks, etc) is updated as well. Out with the old and in with the new. This can be just as, if not more handy than current maps.

I was disappointed with the last update I purchased (2011) so I'm going to wait in terms of factory navigation but will keep my Garmin up to date. To find a Walmart some times I have to put in Wal-Mart instead Walmart or the closest one that it finds will be two states away.

Does one shop at Walmart because they own a Lexus, or does one own a Lexus because they shop at Walmart?

If you go to Walmart frequent enough, you can save enough $ to buy a Lexus....LOL
