I believe your problem is perhaps unique to the Windows operating system as a Mac would write this as an ISO 9660 hybrid disc by default. Not sure about Linux.

CD+R's do exist, but are kinda hard to find nowadays. I think it's just a slightly different format, though I don't really remember what was actually different. I know back in the day, there was some compatibility issues with CD+R's not working in all players, so it was recommended to just not use CD+R's when burning CD's and simply sticking to CD-R's.

These are the CD disc formats I remember: CD-R, CD-RW, CD-ROM, CD-ROM/XA, CD-Audio, Video-CD, Photo CD, CD-I(FMV), CD-Extra, CD-TEXT.
