Adaptive Front lighting System

The 2004 RX 330 features the first Lexus application of the Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS). AFS is an advanced lighting system that helps optimize road visibility in turns by swiveling the vehicle's headlights into the right or left based on vehicle speed and steering angle.

The left beam can rotate from 0 to 15 degrees in a left turn while the right beam remains in the center position. The right beam can rotate from 0 to 5 degrees in a right turn while the left beam remains in a center position. The headlamps also have a self-leveling feature (similar to HID) that levels the lights depending on road conditions. An AFS on/off switch allows the driver to disengage the AFS system at anytime.

AFS, combined with HID, is included on RX 330 vehicles equipped with air suspension.

Power Rear Liftgate

The 2004 RX 330 features a power rear liftgate for hands-free cargo area opening.
· The power rear liftgate can be activated either from inside the vehicle or by the in-key remote.
· A beeper sounds when the door is opening/closing to notify people to stand clear.
· Touch sensors on the door will sense if something is impeding the hatch and stop its opening/closing.

Multi-Panel Moonroof

The RX 330 features a unique, optional multi-panel moonroof in addition to the optional normal moonroof.
· Open area is 150% larger than a normal moonroof.
· Illumination area is 250% larger than a normal moonroof.
· The multi-panel moonroof is made of three 3 separate glass panels:
- Front small panel is angled to reduce wind noise.
- Rear panel slides backwards on top of vehicle.
- Middle glass panel slides backwards on top of rear panel.

Lexus RX 330 Brings Premium Features To Entry-Luxury SUV Segment

01/05/2003 Detroit, MI

The vehicle that started it all is back with more luxury features than ever. The all-new 2004 Lexus RX 330 is equipped with driveline and safety systems that provide the RX driver and passengers with even greater peace of mind in all types of driving conditions. In addition, Lexus increased standard luxury content in the new RX 330 compared to the previous model while making new premium-level options available.

New technology added to the RX 330 was designed to make the vehicle easier and more enjoyable to drive and more comfortable for passengers. "Lexus customers expect any new technology to improve the driving experience, not to complicate or frustrate it," said Denny Clements Lexus group vice president and general manager.

Adaptive Headlight And Cruise Control Systems
The new RX 330 offers several options designed to help improve visibility for night driving and poor weather conditions. Rain-sensing windshield wipers and High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights are expected in this segment, but Lexus goes further by offering an Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS) for better illumination in turns and curves. A central controller calculates the optimum lighting direction based on input from vehicle speed and steering angle and swivels the right and left headlights independently. As a result, the driver can see further into a curve.
In place of the standard cruise control system, customers can choose Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) like that offered on the Lexus LS 430 flagship sedan. It uses lasers to measure distance from a vehicle traveling ahead and maintain a set distance from it.

Optional Air Suspension System
A new optional air suspension system helps enhance handling, driving comfort, and versatility in the RX 330. Automatic leveling ensures generous suspension travel and helps to preserve ride comfort. Four driver-selectable height settings allow the driver to tailor the RX 330 to specific driving conditions or needs.

In "Normal" mode, the system lowers ride height by 0.3 inches (7 mm) when vehicle speed exceeds 62 mph (100 km/h) to reduce aerodynamic drag for better handling and ride comfort. The vehicle returns to normal ride height when speed falls below about 50 mph (80 km/h). A driver-selectable "Low" mode reduces ride height by 0.6 inches (15 mm), resulting in more responsive steering and better tracking through curves and further supports the vehicle's sedan-like driving characteristics.

The air suspension system helps boost the light-duty off-road capability that some customers want without compromising the on-road performance and comfort that are cornerstones of the vehicle's appeal and success. For driving over rough roads or unpaved trails at speeds of 30 mph or under, the driver can select the "High" position, which increases ground clearance by 1.2 inches (30 mm) and also increases the angles of approach and departure.

The air suspension's "Access" mode lowers ride height by 1.2 inches (30 mm) to make it easier to exit or load/unload the RX 330. The driver can select this mode while the vehicle is idling in the Park position, and the RX 330 can change to "Access" mode automatically when the ignition switch is turned off if the driver chooses.

Components of the air suspension system include a compressor/dryer unit mounted at the rear of the vehicle, a low-pressure tank under the floor and a pneumatic cylinder at each wheel. Each of the cylinders integrates an air spring and shock absorber. There is a height-control valve between the compressor and each of the pneumatic cylinders, and a height sensor for each axle. A central electronic control unit (ECU) controls the valves in response to signals from the height sensors. The low-pressure tank ensures quick suspension lowering response time. All RX 330 models with the air suspension system are equipped with a multi-mode automatic (sequential) transmission.

New VSC-Controlled Four-Wheel Drive
Both the front-drive and four-wheel drive RX 330 models come equipped with the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system as standard. In both models, VSC helps keep the vehicle going on its intended course by detecting front wheel slide and rear-wheel slide during cornering and attempting to control either condition with torque intervention and/or by braking individual wheels.

The new four-wheel drive system for the RX 330 is simpler and lighter than the one used previously and uses VSC to redirect engine power when wheel slippage occurs. In addition, driveshaft elements are situated in a straighter line, which helps reduce friction and driveline noise.

Like its predecessor, the RX 330 uses a center differential to split engine power evenly between the front and rear wheels. If wheelslip occurs, VSC re-apportions power front-to-rear and side-to-side, eliminating the need for the viscous coupling used on the previous model.

A new standard tire pressure monitor alerts the driver in the event of tire under-inflation. VSC and the Brake Assist feature work with the standard four-wheel anti-lock brake system (ABS). Brake Assist is designed to determine if the driver is attempting emergency braking and, if the driver has not stepped hard enough on the brake pedal to engage the ABS, the system applies maximum braking power until pedal pressure is released.

New Safety Systems
The new-generation supplemental restraint systems (SRS) in the RX 330 include multi-stage front airbags for the driver and passenger, a new knee airbag for the driver and a new kind of side airbag in the front seats. The multi-stage front passenger and driver front airbags deploy according to impact severity. The technology behind these systems also takes passenger weight and driver seat position on the seat track into account.

The Lexus RX 330 side airbags cover the torso, abdomen and pelvis and are larger than those used in other vehicles. The side airbags also help provide additional crash energy management for the front and rear outboard occupants.

The RX 330 is available with the optional Lexus Link system. At the press of a button, or automatically in certain emergency situations, Lexus Link combines GPS satellite and cellular phone technology to connect the customer with experienced and trained Lexus Link advisors at anytime, day or night, 365 days a year (when cellular and GPS services are available). Lexus Link services include automatic notification of air bag deployment, dispatch of emergency services, accident assistance, roadside assistance with location, theft notification and stolen vehicle tracking, plus remote door lock and unlock.

New Options Raise the Level of Luxury
A number of new options for the RX 330 are designed to increase comfort, convenience and listening pleasure. Lexus expects most RX 330 customers to choose the power rear liftgate, which can be controlled by the standard in-key remote entry unit. An available power tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel column helps to ensure comfort for drivers of all heights.

Lexus is the only car company to offer custom-tailored Mark Levinson audio systems. The RX 330 system produces 240 watts of continuous average power at a remarkably low .01% THD, through a 20-20,000 Hz frequency response. The Mark Levinson system available in the RX 330 plays through 11 speakers, including a center channel speaker.

An optional, factory-installed DVD rear-seat entertainment system uses a high-resolution TFT screen that lowers from the headliner, and the package includes a remote control and two wireless headphones. Rear seat passengers can listen to a different audio source than those in the front when using the wireless headphones.

A DVD-based Lexus Navigation System with a rear back-up camera is optional. The rear back-up camera is mounted near the top of the license plate surround and automatically projects an image of what is behind the vehicle onto the navigation screen when the vehicle is in the reverse gear.

Default Lexus Canada press release (eh?)

Lexus introduces the 2004 RX 330
Code:
A new standard in luxury sport utility vehicles

    DETROIT, Jan. 5 /CNW/ - Lexus today unveiled the all-new 2004 RX 330, the
second generation of its ground-breaking mid-sized luxury sport utility
vehicle, at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Fully
redesigned, more powerful and even better equipped than the best-selling Lexus
RX 300 it replaces, the striking RX 330 sets a new standard in its class for
comfort, performance, safety and luxury.
The 2004 RX 330, which will be built at both Toyota's Kyushu plant in
Japan and at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC) in Cambridge, Ontario,
is designed and manufactured to provide the best ride quality of any luxury
SUV on the market. The RX 330 also delivers all-weather driving fun and
confidence with a combination of full-time four-wheel drive and advanced
traction and stability control technology.
"We're proud to have been given the mandate to produce the first Lexus
outside of Japan," said TMMC President, Ray Tanguay. "Highest quality, new
technology, close attention to detail - that's what the new RX 330 demands and
that's what our Canadian team members will deliver."
"Lexus is the North American leader in luxury SUVs because we proved it
was possible to create an SUV with the ride quality and luxury that made Lexus
sedans famous," added Larry Hutchinson, National Manager of Lexus in Canada.
"The new RX 330 sets yet another benchmark, creating an entirely new set of
expectations for a luxury SUV."
The elegant new exterior design is the most noticeable difference.
Tapered headlamps, streamlined hood and fenders, more muscular body lines, and
a unique tail lamp and rear tailgate arrangement set this new Lexus apart from
any other SUV in the segment. The new design also minimizes wind noise that
plagues many, less aerodynamic SUVs. In fact, powertrain, wind and road noise
have been reduced to levels similar to those of the Lexus ES 300 sedan.

    All-Weather Power and Confidence

Under a sleek hood is an equally new 3.3-litre V6 engine that produces
230 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 242 lb/ft of torque at 3,600 rpm. Variable
Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) and a new electronic drive-by-wire
throttle help the all-new engine achieve Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV)
status.
The V6 is mated to a new 5-speed electronic transmission and, like its
predecessor, uses a centre differential to split engine power evenly between
the front and rear wheels. The full-time four-wheel drive system is lighter
than before and equipped with a complement of standard traction and stability
control systems including Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), full-time Traction
Control (TRAC) and advanced Vehicle Stability Control (VSC).
Power-assisted disc brakes are enhanced with Electronic Brake Force
Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist which applies additional brake pressure in
emergency braking situations to achieve the shortest possible stopping
distance.

    Luxurious, Comfortable, Convenient

Inside, outstanding Lexus packaging optimizes comfort and utility for
five passengers. An extraordinary range of standard luxury features includes
leather interior; heated power front seats with two driver memory settings;
dual zone, automatic climate control with air filter; anti-theft system with
engine immobilizer, integrated garage door opener; and sliding centre console,
to name a few. The new RX 330 is also slightly wider and has a wheelbase that
is approximately 100 mm (4 inches) longer, providing more interior space.
In addition, RX 330 offers some of the most sophisticated optional
equipment available in any kind of luxury vehicle, SUV or sedan. These
include:

    - An air suspension system with automatic levelling and four selectable
height settings to provide the optimum ride height for a variety of
conditions. "Normal" mode automatically lowers the RX 330 slightly at
highway speeds to improve handling and ride comfort. "Low" mode reduces
the ride height even further to enhance response. "High" mode increases
ground clearance when driving over rough surfaces at low speeds, and
"Access" mode provides the lowest setting for easier entries, exits and
      loading.
    - Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS) for better illumination in turns
and curves. A central controller calculates the optimum lighting
direction based on vehicle speed and steering angle and swivels the
headlights independently, allowing the driver approaching a curve in
the road ahead to see further before entering it.
    - A power rear tailgate, controlled from the standard keyless remote
entry system. An automatically-retracting tonneau cover adds even more
      security and convenience.
    - A large multi-panel tilt and slide moonroof
    - A 240-watt Mark Levinson sound system with 11 speakers and in-dash 6-CD
      changer.
    - A factory-installed DVD rear-seat entertainment system with a
high-resolution screen that lowers from the headliner. The package
includes a remote control and two wireless headphones. Rear seat
passengers can listen to a different audio source than those in the
front when using the wireless headphones.
    - A DVD-based Lexus Navigation System with voice recognition and a
rear-facing back-up camera. The back-up camera is mounted near the top
of the license plate surround and automatically projects an image of
what is behind the vehicle onto the navigation screen when the vehicle
      is in reverse gear.

The Highest Levels of Occupant Protection

The new high-strength cabin design and comprehensive new supplemental
restraint system are designed to provide an increased level of crash energy
management that protects occupants better than ever before. Structurally the
new RX 330 is designed to maintain cabin integrity in the event of front, rear
or side impacts.
The supplemental restraint system includes multi-stage airbags for the
driver and front passenger, a new knee airbag for the driver and a new type of
large side airbag in the front seats that specifically protects the torso,
abdomen and pelvis. Side curtain airbags are designed to help offer additional
crash protection for both front and rear seat occupants. The front airbags
deploy according to inputs that include crash severity, passenger weight and
the position of the driver's seat on the track.

Built to World-Class Standards - In Canada

When production starts in September 2003, the 2004 RX 330 will be the
first Lexus built outside of Japan. Toyota's award-winning Cambridge assembly
plant is slated to build about 60,000 RX 330s a year.
To prepare for Lexus production in Canada, TMMC is undergoing a $650
million renovation including new welding and paint facilities exclusively for
Lexus. The new paint shop is designed with the environment in mind. It
features water-borne cartridge paint technology, its own climate control
system, glass walls and zero-dust, high efficiency ovens.
The Lexus RX has consistently been judged the highest-quality vehicle in
its segment and TMMC is well prepared to uphold that standard of excellence.
Since the Canadian facility opened 12 years ago it has earned seven J.D. Power
and Associates awards for Plant Quality - including four Gold Plant awards.
RX 330 is covered by an industry-leading warranty, covering the entire
vehicle for 48 months/80,000 kilometres. Powertrain components are covered for
72 months/110,000 kilometres, and corrosion perforation is warranted for 72
months with unlimited distance.
The 48-month Lexus roadside assistance program provides travel planning
as well as the extra security and confidence of a dedicated toll-free
telephone number and emergency service or towing 24 hours a day, 365 days a
year.

Great Vehicle and great Technology.

I have a question with regard of the Adaptive Light system...I read that the Left light swivels 15 degrees but the Right light rotates just 5 degrees why is that?

Why not both move 15 degrees?

I was wondering about this and I believe it has to do with the fact that the driver is on the left hand side of the car. Normally there's not much light coverage to the left of the driver. In a left turn, the driver will need to look to the left. The left headlight needs to angle quite a bit to give the driver coverage on the left side. In a right turn, because the driver is on the left hand side of the car, the area to the right of the car will already be lit by the both headlights. The right headlight only needs to angle a little bit to improve the light coverage to the right.

Lexus Introduces New RX 330 Luxury Utility Vehicle For 2004

LEX-02-03

01/06/2003 Detroit, MI

Five years ago, the Lexus RX 300 created the luxury crossover segment. Lexus will once again revolutionize this segment with its all-new 2004 RX 330 which made its worldwide debut at a press conference yesterday at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The second generation RX will go on sale in April and will offer luxury amenities and technology not available in other vehicles in its class.

"The original RX 300 became the template for a new kind of luxury vehicle, one that many competitors are now following," said Denny Clements, Lexus group vice president and general manager. "The RX 330 was designed to surpass its successful predecessor in every way and set a new benchmark in the segment."

The RX 330 will become the first Lexus to be manufactured in North America when production begins on a new line at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Canada, seven months after initial production starts at the Kyushu plant in Japan.

The 2004 RX 330 is an integral part of the unique three-SUV strategy that has allowed Lexus to lead this category of the market. It will have an annual sales target of 75,000 units and the base price for the RX is expected to remain at about $35,000.

Several new features help the RX 330 raise the standard in the entry-luxury SUV segment. Examples include the innovative Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS), adjustable-height air suspension, adaptive cruise control, power rear liftgate, and rear backup camera.

The sleek new RX 330 has more room than the previous generation afforded by a 6.1-inch longer body and a wheelbase that is almost four inches longer. Width has also grown by 1.1 inches while height has grown by just under half an inch.

Lexus optimized interior comfort and utility in the RX 330 for five passengers. The second-row seats both slide and recline while the seatbacks feature a new 40/20/40 split design. The available power rear liftgate is controlled from the standard in-key remote entry system. An automatic-retracting tonneau cover adds a measure of security and convenience.

The RX will be one of the first U.S. vehicles with AFS. It features swiveling headlamps to help illuminate the driver's path on curves. The RX 330 also offers a unique adaptive laser cruise control system like that on the brand's LS 430 flagship sedan.

A revised V6 engine displacing 3.3 liters and producing 230 horsepower and 242 lb-ft. of torque powers the RX 330. It features a new electronic drive-by-wire throttle and continuously Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) system for excellent response. A ULEV rating is also achieved.

Teamed to a new five-speed electronic automatic transmission, the larger V6 gives the RX 330 all-wheel drive model a best-in-class zero-to-60 mph time of 7.8 seconds (vs. 8.8 for the RX 300) while providing EPA estimated fuel mileage of 18 mpg city/ 24 mpg highway (+1 mpg on each cycle over the RX 300).

The 2004 RX 330 provides an even smoother and quieter ride than the previous RX, thanks to a stiffer body structure, a redesigned active engine mount, new sound-absorption materials and refined aerodynamic details. Noise from the powertrain, road and wind have all been reduced to nearly the same levels as in the Lexus ES 300 sedan.

The stiffer platform, newly standard 17-inch wheels and revised steering help to optimize handling response in the RX 330. Eighteen-inch wheels also are available. The optional air suspension system provides automatic leveling and four selectable height settings which allow the driver to tailor the RX 330 to specific driving conditions or needs, including an access mode to provide easier entry, exit and cargo loading. A multi-mode automatic (sequential) transmission is standard on air suspension-equipped models.

All RX 330 models come equipped with the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system, which helps control loss of lateral traction while cornering. VSC and the Brake Assist feature work with the standard four-wheel anti-lock brake system (ABS). A tire pressure monitor alerts the driver with a light on the instrument panel in the event of tire under-inflation.

The high-strength cabin and a comprehensive new supplemental restraint system are designed to help provide a new level of crash energy management for occupants in the RX 330.

Supplemental restraint systems (SRS) include multi-stage front airbags for the driver and passenger, side-curtain airbags, a new knee airbag for the driver and a new large side airbag in the front seats that covers the torso, abdomen and pelvis.

Available rain-sensing windshield wipers, AFS and High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights with washers enhance visibility in poor-weather and night driving. The RX 330 can also be ordered with the optional Lexus Link system.

Lexus craftsmanship and attention to the smallest details provide true luxury by design. Dual-zone automatic climate control and an eight-way power front driver seat with memory (four-way for the passenger seat) highlight the front cabin. The three-spoke steering wheel comes with standard, easy-to-use controls for the audio system and trip computer.

A sliding center console, adjustable light in the visor vanity mirrors and a choice of two genuine wood interior trim options are among the luxurious details that set the tone for luxury in the RX 330.

The high-performance CD audio system upholds the Lexus tradition of making premium-quality sound standard. RX customers will be able to upgrade to an optional Mark Levinson 11-speaker system with an in-dash 6-disc CD changer. A factory-installed rear DVD entertainment system is also available.

Lexus has been adding premium-level options to its entry-luxury models, and notable examples for the RX 330 include a power tilt/telescoping steering wheel with memory, a wide-opening multi-panel moonroof and a new illuminated entry system that lights the door handles, scuff plates and front foot wells.

A DVD-based Lexus Navigation System with a rear back-up camera also is optional. The rear back-up camera automatically projects a color image of what is behind the vehicle onto the navigation screen when the vehicle is in the reverse gear.

The RX 330 will be available in nine colors, six of which are all-new to the model.
