transmission flush
Ref: 2009 RX-350 AWD, 90K
Talked to various people re: whether i should get a trans. flush or a drain and fill.....drain and fill only removes oil from trans. pan...maybe 3-4 qts..... a trans. flush removes all of the oil throughout the trans. system...maybe 8-9 qts......does it make sense to only remove part of the dirty oil [drain and fill]while leaving the remaining dirty oil within the trans. system......thanks for your help.

Just do a drain and refill at 20K miles interval. I start using this 20K-miles interval at 80K miles and the shifts are smooth. You can get the WS fluid at ebay $37-40 shipped 4 quarts and bring it to your shop.

From everything that I have read, the flush runs a higher risk of damaging your transmission and the drain and fill is the way to go. If you have the transaxle cooler, the dealership will put the car's computer in service mode so that the pump for the cooler will pump all the old fluid out and the new fluid in.

I've only done drain and fill on my 01 LS430 now at 148k miles. On my recently acquired 04 RX330 with 188K miles, I just did a drain and fill. My Toyota Indy Mechanic recommended drain and fill with 30K intervals starting at 60K miles. He says he doesn't see cars come back with tranny issues on this schedule. Any my tranny oil was relatively clean to begin with at 188K so no need to do more than the recommended schedule.

Was told that my RX-350 AWD[90,000 miles] does not have a dip stick...if that's the case and i choose to do a drain and fill where is the intake for the new oil[about 4 quarts] ...sorry but i'm not a car person.....wanted to buy the toyota transmission oil from the lexus dealer[ $9.75/ quart] and bring it to an independent shop which has lower labor rates[i do trust this shop] but dealer parts guy didn't like that idea......any help would be appreciated.
If there is no dipstick then how does the dealer service guys know my transmission fluid is dirty.

Does anyone know if it's valid also for the 400h tranny?

RX-350 AWD,90,000......went to lexus dealer and asked for a transmission drain and fill and gasket change [per the responses from my original post]....took about 4 quarts.@$9.75/qt......dealer techs did the work but did NOT change the filter....only would do if i wanted a trans. flush@$100 more......i declined but now thinking i should have got this work done....should i go to and independent shop [ i do trust this shop] and ask for a trans. filter change only...should i buy the trans. filter online or at o'reilys'.....thks. for any responses...not a car guy and want to keep my car for another 30,000 miles.
