Centric premium rotors vs "oem"?
Hi all,
After changing the brakes and rotors with oem replacement parts, I was thinking about centric for the next brake job. Does anyone have any experience in the Centric premium rotors? Looking at the picture of the centric premium rotor online at rockauto, the cross-hatch machining looks very similar to the oem. I'm wondering if centric is the company that actually may make Toyota/Lexus oem rotors.
Which brings me to my next question. Does anyone know who the manufacturer is for the oem rotors? Thanks!

Centric is an aftermarket company. Centric premium rotors are manufactured in the same way OE rotors are. The only real difference would be the coating… Centric premiums come with a black, electro-plated finish around the hubs and within the vents, which OE rotors do not have. Brake companies like Brembo and Akebono usually have the original contract for the brakes on Toyota & Lexus, but it depends on the application as well. Hope this helps!

by any chance do you think the akebono pads will cover the entire rotors pads ? since the one i have on my car now it has a lilttle gap and it look rusty from not being sweeped by the brake pads ? are the centric with the akebono have the same gaps ? thanks

A few yrs ago I went w/ Centric rotors & pads, still have them on the rrear. Since I upgraded to the gen 3 setup for the front, I used Bosch rotors w/ Wagner oex pads....The coating on the Bosch rotors is still shining. Since your swapping out your pads/rotors, a great upgrade in braking performance is to get a pr of reman '10-'15 RX calipers, rotors & pads. Have a ;ook at the gen2 pad to a gen3 pad= more surface area as well as two piston caliper vs the single piston of the original. The rotor diameter difference is 12.5'' to 12.9''. The pricing between the rotors/pads is pretty much awash & all your out is the price of the reman calipers. Direct bolt on as well as the brake hoses & thats one thing I did as well, as Tirerack offers a SS brake hose kit for the RX. I also flushed out the old brake fluid w/ new dot 3.......You'll find the pedal travel isn't as far & it slows & stops sooner then the oem sizing.....thanx to the two piston calipers & the bigger pads surface......Have a look at #1005 gen 2 pads compared to #1324 gen 3 pads will show you......

Lexus Test Driver
I called the local lexus dealer parts dept. a while ago and asked what comes on oem pads because I was curious and they said all Lexus use Semi-metallic.
Have no way to confirm if this is true but that is what the parts guy told me.

I could never get a definitive answer on whether Toyota pads are ceramic or semi-metallic. It's strange how Toyota doesn't make that clear on the box/description.
I bought Advics rotors from Rock Auto or Ebay. Supposedly Advics are the USA OEM manufacturer for Toyota. Aisin owns Advics, and Toyota is a major owner of Aisin (and Denso).

Almost ceertainly semi-metallic, they give best brake feel when cold on test drives, and work great at the expensive of wheel dust, but this is after sale. No complaints, they work fine.

You'll still have a gap. I just swapped out all four corners with new Centrics and Akebono's. I'd say it is like 1/4 of an inch-ish.

No gap for me, but I have the 3RX brake setup. I think it has to do with the calipers/pads and not the brand. I’m running Centric Premium rotors and Akebono ProACT pads. Have been running this setup for years on different cars and results are always fantastic. They work well, last and don’t break the bank.

Don't forget guys that the 2008-2013 Highlander rear brakes fit as well, despite not being as big of a jump as the fronts, they're a welcome upgrade for sure.
