Engine air filter - update, broken bolt on back side?
I posted an earlier message asking about being able to see a thin line of my filter after replacing it. Well.......
I went back to check things out and the rear bolt had sheared off. The front side of the air filter box seems fine, but now this issue. On such a simple task too.
Anyone ever have this happen? If so, did you have to replace the full box assembly, or can a dealer remove the broken bolt and fix it? Thanks

I have the same issue on our 2004 RX330. I was trying to use an aftermarket air filter that didn't fit quite right and I sheared the bolt and broke part of the box, so I need a new air filter box assembly.
Yours will depend if the box is still fully functional and only the bolt broke. I found the entire assembly on eBay (both OEM and aftermarket) much cheaper than the dealer. In fact, they have a few that are from wrecked RX's.
Ours has been broken since around the 140,000 mile mark and I still haven't replaced it; RX just turned 200,000 miles this weekend.

what a POS box! I did not apply unusual torque at all, barely tightened beyond finger strength on the extension on the socket wrench and snap, there it was. Do you remember what the replacement costs were? Mine is only the bolt assembly, nothing else. I was thinking of having a local shop drill it out, and just use HD electrical ties to hold the back tight.

I agree, that and the placement of the oil filter always makes me curse the engineers. For the air filter, I cannot believe they didn't use a clamp or clip like most other manufacturers.
To replace the entire assembly, it was around $600; so I chose not to.
I have been looking for some type of clamp that I can put on the back of the box, but haven't ever found anything. I was thinking about a locking c-clamp, but I am always afraid it will work itself loose and fall into the engine bay.
If assembly box is okay, you can purchase a bolt (part # 90119-06465).
If you find a clamp, please let me know how you did it!

It is a pain. I have developed a technique that involves shoving the cover. Had to do it today. Worked. The constraint is the wire cover in the corner. Now that's where they screwed up. Jamming that wire harness in that corner.
