Default Extended warranty paid for itself.

I bought Lexus Platinum Care 4/50 extended warranty for my wife's '08 RX350 at the end of the original 4/50 warranty, paid $1960 for it. So, my total warranty ended up being 8/1000. Since it is expiring on Jan 2, 2016, (the mileage now is 92K) I asked Lexus of Portland to do a multi-point inspection to make sure everything is good to go. They said, "Sure, bring it in, no charge".

So, I did earlier today. They found a small leak at the engine oil pan gasket, no biggy, and a leak on the power steering rack. Total cost a little of repair would have been over $2K. They will "re-seal" the oil pan, whatever it means, and replace the entire steering rack, following by alignment, covered by Lexus.

Earlier this year I took my '08 GS350 in for some recall work, it had 60K miles, past the factory warranty, but I also bought additional 4/25 warranty for $1200 a while back. So, while working on the recall stuff, they found a tiny leak on the water pump and one of the front axle CV boots was leaking grease. Both parts were replaced an no charge. Had I not had the extended warranty that would have cost $1600.

So, I am glad I spent money on the warranty.

And it is stories just like this that convince people to buy such warranties. Insurance companies do not make money by paying out more than the premiums take in.

Glad it worked out for you.

Agree, and normally I do not buy extended warranties. BTW, Lexus Platinum Care was not a third-party warranty, it is the same thing that certified pre-owned Lexus cars get. No deductible, no fighting over coverage. I would never buy a third-party extended warranty.

Back to the dealership today, water inside the headlights. Lexus is replacing both AFS headlights under warranty. However, I was told today that the headlights on 2004-2009 RXs have their own extended 10-year warranty due to high failure rate in the past.
