Default considering purchasing a 05 Lexus Rx

I am currently considering the above vehicle. However, the owner does not have the "flat Key" should I still buy the car or will this create a major problem in the future??

The flat key? You mean the wallet key? No, the one you want us the one with 3 buttons or the master key

The flat key will only let you unlock the doors, you can't start the car with it. Hopefully the car has the 2 keys with the remote built into them.

If you like the car and the price is right, buy it. These are nice cars. But if you are getting only one key that will start the car, you should get another key made and programmed as soon as possible so you have a spare at home.

I would not let this simple issue stop you. Personally the Lexus RX330 has been the best vehicle we have ever owned. Currently I own Audi and Jaguar, and the Lexus beats both. We also had a GX that was a very good vehicle. Previously we have owned the Mercedes M-Class also and they all spent more time in the shop then I care to explain.

If you want a vehicle that is pretty fun, very sound mechanically and looks great, the RX or any Lexus is the way to go.

Default Check your local dealership.

We bought a 2007 Lexus RX with only one key and found that having another key made was fairly expensive. I would check in with your dealership, if you think you might want the other key in the future and depending on the price, you might ask for a discount in the vehicle.

Most local locksmiths can make keys for the car and are less expensive than the dealer. But the key with the remote is still expensive.

I just went through this. I ended up purchasing 2 more spares, programmed them myself and paid maybe $100. There are sellers on Ebay who only need a picture of your current key in order to duplicate it. They'll send you the remote and key, which will open the car but won't start it until you program the car. In order to program it, I had to buy a ODB device on Amazon (delivered from China, way overpriced but still cheaper than the dealer).

Programming it was a little tricky due to the timing needed, but I was able to add the two new keys and remotes in about 20 minutes.

The wallet key and the it's holder will allow you to start the car. You have to hold the keyholder close to the switch.

Didn't know that, thanks for the info. I didn't get the flat key with my car so I couldn't experiment and find that out.
