i may be picking up a 2004 rx330. What specific problem areas should I Ben aware of. I hope the trans and transfer case in these hold up a lot better than the first gen that I have now as the reason I'm looking at a second gen rx is because my current first gen has a transmission whine to it telling that the trans could take a dump at any time and the transfer case is leaking fluid so it's not worth putting all that $ into a vehicle this old.

There are a couple of things you can do to check that RX out. First, check on NHTSA website for all recalls and TSB's for that year, this will give you a better idea of what types of problems others may have had, and what to address if you do get the car. Second, get the VIN and create a username and account at My Lexus. Enter the VIN and it will show you the service history the vehicle has had at Lexus dealers.

Owning a first gen, I guess you're aware that the timing change should have been changed when the car reaches 90K miles. We've considered buying a used RX330 to replace our Highlander that we're giving to our son. I'm amazed at how many have no documentation that the chain was changed.
