Default Crusing range

So I have never gone past 1 mile left on the crusing range ( I don't know if it even goes down past that) but what I'm wondering is do you run out of gas after that? Or is there so space to keep going. My gas light turns on at 16 miles left on the crusing range. & when there is 1 mile left it rests pretty much right on E. my ford freestyle before this would go under E. so will you run out of gas at 1 mile left or is it telling you there isn't room to drive around

I would recommend to keep the level of fuel as much as possible no less than 1/2 Full as moisture or condensation will build up in the gas tank (especially in winter with colder climates).
That way you will never get a wrong answer for your question & it's a much better practice for maintenance of the vehicle.
What I do is replace E(mpty) with 1/2 Full, when I reach 1/2 Full, I'll fuel up.

I run past "E" all the time. Last time was probably by 20 miles, and I was sweating it as I pulled into the gas station. When I filled it up, it took 17.6 gallons... for a 19.2 gallon tank... That means there was still over 1.5 gallons left in the tank, or an effective cruising range of roughly 25 miles based on my average of 17 MPG. With that in mind, going by my current average fuel economy, I'd say the "Distance to Empty" is roughly 40-50 miles once it hits zero. If you're averaging higher fuel economy, that number could be higher. I'm not sure if the DTE factors in your current fuel economy calculations to the extent that it comes on regardless of how much gas is left if you're nearing 40-50 miles of actual range or not. In other words, if you're averaging 22 MPG, the DTE could show "0 miles to empty" when less fuel is left in the tank, simply because you're going farther on less fuel.

But, anyway... when it shows "0", you have plenty of time to find a gas station. While this feature is nice to have, it would be nice to have better accuracy. At least it's not as irritating as a few cars I've had, which changed to "- - -" (looking at you, Subaru, Hyundai and Kia) after it went below 30 miles to empty or so... that was annoying.
