Normally some would clean the MAF Sensor with a spray of electronic cleaner & it should be fine although if you are getting a code for a defective sensor....
here is one at a more reasonable cost for trial purposes.

Gas millage leads to many variables as tire pressure, heavy on the foot to deposits on Fuel Injectors, Spark Plugs due to be replaced & more.

I clean and change MAF sensors quite often as I maintain a fleet of Toyotas and Hondas for family and friends. Typically the gains in MPG and performance are minimal, it's there but not a noticeable amount.
Usually a new MAF sensor will not throw codes if it is the right type and not defective (which I have had). But I recommend using only OEM or the OEM supplier and new if you're going to replace it, I have had issues with used OEM sensors from junk yards and unknown brands.

MAF sensor being clean is good, but modded MAF's only fool the engine into starving the engine for fuel which is harmful over the long term. This isn't a performance engine, don't mod it as such.
