The factory installed system is integrated with far too many systems that make retrofitting
it beyond costly and time consuming. Consider getting an iPad Mini w/3G and mounting it
to play Waze.

DITTO. My Galaxy Note phone is about 80% size of the nav display. Without all the goofy stuff on OEM display. It also fits fine into the nav screen nook or, can be mounted anywhere else convenient, which is, actually in the line of sight, not off to the distracting right side. Waze updates itself every few days, gives real traffic info, police, accidents, other warnings and bypasses. No nav system else will do this. So why bother? Waze uses minimal data and I run it 3 hrs a day 5-6 days a week.

It is not as easy as yanking out the old radio and mounting a different head unit.
Recall that when you are using a portable nav such as a Garmin and you drive
into a parking garage. Once you have lost the GPS satellites the unit is lost when
you turn back and forth inside. The factory system uses the wheel speed sensors
to approximate your distance and direction until the GPS signal is recovered.
The wiring for a non-Nav RX will not provide enough inputs for this and rewiring
will require more time and expertise than most of us have or can afford to hire.
If you must have Navigation strongly reconsider finding a suitable replacement
and trade up. Since you are taking such a large step be sure to check the Date
of the Map Data. New cars have data that was finalized the year before the car
was built.

I have a 2008 RX350 with factory installed navigation. I also installed a Pioneer AVIC 411 navigation and sound system. Those have both been surpassed by Waze and Google Maps, both of which I currently use. They are constantly updated and they have more features than my in dash systems which are now 12 years old. I wouldn't waste my money on an in-dash system that still can't keep up with a phone app. Just my 2 cents.
