Default Failing Ignition Switch Solenoid ?

Recently I've been having an issue where the key won't turn because the ignition solenoid won't pull in and allow the key to turn. The key has a new battery and it can work the door locks etc. fine even from a distance, I've shot some WD-40 into the lock and nothing changed, however I have discovered that if I pound on the dash around the key it will finally release and the key will turn. I've looked for pictures of the ignition switch assembly to try and figure out where the solenoid is so I can somehow address it, but can't seem to find diagram or anything to help.

Is this a common issue, is there a typical solution ?

Thanks for any help, this is really maddening !

This is not a common issue. But the photos in this thread may help you.

do NOT use wd40 etc in a lock. They are a wet lube and attract dust that will cause sticking. Only use a dry lube, silicon spray, graphite etc.

The spare key doesn't have any RFID guts

When you're stuck in front of your house in the dark and can't get to work WD-40 is worth a shot ! (I'll try something else next time).

Yes, those are very helpful, thanks !

Now I know the solenoid is on top and it's about 5" inboard.

Hmm, somehow I need to figure out how to lube the plunger with some dry PTFE without removing it.

Its ok.
Im trying to eliminate a worn key even though it turns the door locks.

If your current key wont turn in the ign switch and your spare does, then we know its a key problem.

Ah, I see. If I use the key with the busted RFID just to turn the ignition to on while holding the other key with the good RFID near the ignition switch to activate it, I'll know if it's a worn key if the busted key turns fine. Brilliant idea !
