My 2008 Rx400h which has 168k miles on it P/S warning light came on. It is very hard to turn even when driving. Had it towed to local service stations and both recommended taking it to Lexus dealership. Towed it to Lexus dealership and got quote to replace rack and pinion steering for $4800. Seems high to me. Anyone else had this issue? I love my lexus. I have not had any issues at all with this vechicle.

Yes, my steering rack on my 330 leaked a few months back. Very common for Toyota/Lexus for certain models and years, was a bad batch of seals in the racks. Not a slow leak either, I was losing almost all the reservoir fluid in a day. Bought a rebuilt rack, some new lines, jug of Valvoline MaxLife Full Synthetic ATF, and had my trusty mechanic install it all for about $600 give or take some.

the Lexus dealer is going to install a brand new rack and pinion and probably high pressure lines too and from the pump. I would shop around, there are so many of these cars in the US some indy mechanics somewhere must be familiar perhaps you can get a re-manufactured rack and bring it to a reputable shop to put in.

If I recall correctly this vehicle had an electric PS pump which I think the GS430 Hybrid shared. It was rare but I recall one failed someone travelling by our dealership from out of town and I reasearched it while in working in Lexus sales and found reference to a few cases. Check that first and if its the rack you may be able to find a remanufactured version.
