Default Help Needed - Replaced Odometer - Mileage questions

Hi All -

Had a bad combination meter/odometer on my 2004 RX330 a few months ago. Replaced it with one from Ebay which has about 12k miles less than the original..The car is over 15 years old and originally had 133k miles on it. Now it shows 121k miles. I don't think the value of the car is really improved any and that was certainly not my intention when I replaced the odometer/combination meter, but I don't really want to spend another $120 to have Lexus fix the mileage...

Does anyone know for sure if such a small change in mileage in a 15 year old car will be an issue when I go to have it inspected? Obviously they record the mileage at the annual inspection, but does it get tracked in a database anywhere and will they care? Will it show a mismatch when it has fewer miles than it had the year prior?

Thx in advance for the help - don't want to get in trouble over $120....

Pull the eeprom for the odometer from your old one and swap it into the new one.

Lol... Why didn't I think of that? Great idea. Time to go look at it. Might need to post a pic on here and have you identify it. I recall there being several chips on the board.

It will be either a 93c46 or a 93c56 chip on the back of your speedometer board. Looks like the only possible one is ic2 on your board. Unless there is another chip I am not seeing

Also, that's a dip mount chip, they are easier to swap out than a surface mount. I always solder a socket on the board for the dip chips.

The inspection mileage might be reported to carfax and carfax will flag it as a warning that the mileage doesn't match or that the odometer true mileage is unknown.

Hot air rework station is the best way to remove that chip. If you are using a soldering pencil then add some lead solder and flux to the joint first. It will mix with the lead-free solder and make the chip easier to come off. Once the chip is off clean the pads with lead solder and wire braid. Before placing the chip back onto the board use some lead solder on the pad. Good Luck. Go to youtube to learn more about removing chip.

Yes, that looks like the only one on the board. Yes that is the correct number.

Yeah a rework station makes it easier especially for surface mounted chips. On the dip style I've never had a problem using a soldering iron and a solder sucker.
