If the 2nd gen speakers sound better than the first, then I can't imagine how bad the 1st gen sound.
But seriously, folks... I've heard that Lexus cheaped-out in the second gen and used basically the same speakers as in the concurrent Camry and Sienna, and that's consistent with my experience. I thought the stock speakers in the 2nd gen (I have a 2006 RX330, non-ML sound with Nav) were below average quality. Maybe their paper cones just didn't age well after 12 years.
Anyway, there are eight of them. Two dash mid-ranges (3.5"), two A-pillar tweeters (¾" or 1"), two front door woofers (6x9"), and two back door woofers (5 ¼"). They're 2-ohm speakers, so replacing with 4's will result in reduced volume (the stock amp is calibrated for 2-ohm speakers).
I found a new head unit and new speakers to be really unimpressive until I also replaced the amp. Now, it all sounds great -- very full, crisp, and powerful. The low bass is slightly lacking when road noise is high, but I have a small powered sub I hope to install in the next month or so.
