Hello All, I am so sorry if this post has already been made or if there is a known solution that has been already posted.
I am in town, visiting my elderly mother who is the owner of the 2004 RX330 I am trying to help her get some affairs in order and this tailgate is the top of my list.
A few months ago the lift gate stopped functioning correctly.
- Pressing power door on the key fob does not do anything. No lights, no motor noise, nada.
- Same goes for power door button inside vehicle. No noise, no lights, no motor.
- I have checked the button in the glove box and it is in the correct position.
-When attempting to manually open using the button above the license plate the lift gate opens maybe 1 door but will not go higher. When pressed down to close, you are able to hear the motor shutting it all the way.
Ideally trunk access would be helpful for her, but not sure if the repair cost would fit her fixed income at the moment. Does anyone know if there is a manual override?

High probability that the gas struts are shot on the tailgate. They are very easy to replace. Auto stores might have them in stock or else they can order for you. They will gladly remove the old and replace with the new (they are pop-in and pop-out, but somebody has to be supporting the tailgate while this is done). You will need a small screw driver to pop out the snap spring. They are $50+ per pair. No need to bypass. Good luck. I have replaced most of my friends’ tailgate struts, including mine.
