2005 RX AWD - below are images of the front and rear shocks. Notice how the rear shocks are sitting oh so close to the tire, almost as if it were going to touch.
I replaced the rear struts with KYB using the original spring. Can someone tell me what I need to change to get the shocks to sit higher?
Also, how did this happen? Is it safe to drive as is?
Thanks all.
Front shocks seem fine Rear shocks are so close to touching the tire. What do I need to change? Is it safe to drive like this?

The strut assembly moves up and down with the wheel. The tire will never get closer to the strut that that, or further away for that matter as the lower half below the spring perch is fixed in place in relation to the wheel. Only issue you could have is by running too large of a tire, but it would then be rubbing all the time. You should be fine to drive the vehicle without worry.
Any idea on what caused the rear shock to sit so low. I've found old pics I took of the care a few years ago and the shock sat higher (like the front shocks).

the rear spring perch is close to the rear tire in stock form. It would never have been as much as the fronts. There is no 'reason' for it to be low, it is just the way it is, it is non adjustable and those parts do not move in relation to each other.
