Got an 04 330 just hit 140k miles. Transmission was serviced at around 80-90k miles. Want to change transmission fluid now. Would a drain a fill be sufficient? Or should I drop the pan and change the filter out? The fluid is getting quite dark small hint or red mostly dark though.

I would replace the filter and pan gaskets as well. Probably cost no more than $60 online.
I replaced both in my wife's 08 RX350 at 115K miles. I also do a drain/refill every year religious (~10K miles). Now at 135K miles and the car still shift very smooth.

I do the drain and fill at every oil change when my oil was dark until the situation stabilized. I bought a vacuum pump from Amazon to do this so I don't need to remove any drain plug and get a new washer. I do this while I am doing the oil change so I get a head start... I know it isn't perfect ...
With the vacuum pump, you can also replace all the steering fluid and replenish with fresh fluid. The steering system uses the same ATF fluid...

I had filter changed at 180,000. Pan was very clean, no shavings at all, filter was still ok. Doesn't seem like it was necessary in my case. I do d&f everyb10k miles, seems like that was worth it.

Drain and fill, proven reliable. Toyota uses WS Transmission oil now. But the Type T-IV is still available.

Had to replace the transmission and I updated the planetary with hardened gears also welded the caps on the planetary gears this is what causes the trans to go out.
Using Valvoline MAX-LIFE full synthetic transmission fluid and also in the power steering added transmission cooler for the So Cal hot weather.
What I meant above the caps come loose on the planetary gears and the bearings get loose and this causes the trans to fail.
The reason I use synthetic trans fluid had 3 cars go 529,000 405,000 and 300,000 miles and all the trans went the distance including the power steering.
I change the oil at 20k and the filter at 40k I now have 187,000 on my 2001 RX 300 going for 300,000, I use the new Mobil 1 annual in the engine change it at 15,000 miles.
