I should start by mentioning that my key is broken as well (this just happend) but I'm not sure if it's related. I can still press the lock/unlock buttons but the actual key part that goes in the car is now broken off from the little button pad thingy for the alarm. It starts after a bunch of tries and then it won't happen again until another day or so. It's random.
I'm not sure if this is a starter problem or if it's some kind of security/electrical problem related to the key. I'm going to Lexus to get a new key...hopefully it will start again so I can do that and get it to the mechanic.
Would appreciate any thoughts.

I'm betting it's the key, while this key was a TERRIBLE design by lexus, the immobilizer is pretty picky on the orientation of the chip used to start the car. The key body needs to be perfectly perpendicular to the key slot and as close as possible to it, otherwise it will not energize the chip and read it properly.

Thanks for replying! I'll definitely go to Lexus first then and get the key made since I have to do it anyway. Hopefully it's just that and I won't have to have it towed and worked on because of something else. The alarm key pad thing has been cracked for a while and got worse lately and just tonight the metal key part finally cracked off when I was trying to start it.

If that's your only key, fork up the money and have at least two good working masters keys.
I got my RX used and the remote key was already in bad shape and was my only master key. Made spares right away that did not have buttons (solid key) and added a Viper remote start which has the unlock/lock/trunk on the 2-way and never looked back.

this reminds me i definitely need to either get one made from a lexus dealer or just get one off ebay and have it cut by a locksmith maybe but even then i will probably still have to have it programmed to start the vehicle. cause right now i only have one key that works.

I made the dealer provide 2 keys when I bought my car- they tried the "only has one key" trick but that doesn't work on me any more. lol
