What determines the service life of the oil is the number of cold starts, time in heavy traffic and short mileage trips - regardless of oil composition.

And use only mileage as change interval can be a (expen$$$ive) mistake.

I have to agree with this. In a previous lifetime, a long time ago (1970s and 1980s), I worked for Mobil Oil in a technical service laboratory and had the opportunity to see police car and taxi engine teardowns after service with Mobil 1 and comparable non-synthetic engine oils. Mobil 1 engines definitely had far less wear than non-synthetic oils. Similar results were seen on SAE laboratory engine tests. There are so many variables in the operation of a car engine out in real world conditions that sometimes I consider it a wonder that the thing actually starts on a freezing cold morning and then can operate in a desert environment pulling a load up a hill.
Modern engine oils have all progressed impressively in the ensuing time. Both synthetic and non-syn. So use what you want as long as it meets the mfg. specs. and change interval.

I live in the city so I do many short 1-2 mile trips.
So I don't go by mileage, instead I change it once or twice a year and it never has a chance to get dirty- always like new-- running Mobil 1 Full Sunthetic.
