Hi, there isn't a lot of information about these radios for our 2nd gen RX's so I wanted to help everyone out. This is my journey with installation and the final results. Hope it helps.
Remove the factory equipment, there are YouTube videos on how to do this.
Ran the camera and OBD2 behind the dash.
Tidied up the wiring harness for new unit.
Removed the cigarette lighter and installed a USB port.
Reused the cigarette lighter with a charging port to power lower USB. Upper USB will connect to the OTG USB from head unit.
All wires, including the cigarette lighter were wrapped with gaffer tape to ensure nothing wiggles loose or rattles around.
Here is the back of the head unit with wires attached.
The empty plug at the top will go into the climate control line. Depending on year and if you have factory Nav/Back-up camera there are additional cables that will match your factory equipment. You do have to remove the control board from the factory piece and install in this head unit. I don't have pics as I was working alone and the screws are stupid small. I ran the second USB from the head unit to the glove box and have a 2TB NVME connected as a media device.
Next began the oh so fun task of running the remainder of the back up camera wiring. I ran it under the dash behind the TPMS panel to the parking brake, then up the A-pillar and back through the headliner. This was all pretty easy. beginning at the hatch I fished the line through the factory boot.
Up through there and zip tied to the wires following the wire loom around.
Ignore my temp tag, I just bought the Lexus lol. Next I drilled through the trim on the tailgate.
Then I learned the threads on the camera were too short, and had to remove the trim. Upon removing the trim I then learned there is a factory bolt directly above where I drilled and had to remove that for the camera nut to fit. Learn from my mistake. Remove the trim, Drill just the trim, remove the factory bolt and run your wire through the factory bolt hole. I went ahead and ran mine through the hole I drilled mostly because I just realized this as I am writing this up. Oh well.
Getting things wrapped up and the camera fully installed.
Next I had to hide all the wires and ended up bundling everything up, wrapping it in gaffers tape, and ziptying through holes in the lift gate, then reinstalled all the trim.
Now the fun stuff. Here is the head unit fully installed and the car in reverse. The yellow line is built into the head unit and moves based on steering wheel input.
I ended up cutting the camera wire that shows the green yellow red lines. Since the camera was installed slightly off center the lines didn't match up with the yellow and those are tied into the steering wheel.
I gained the offroad pitch and roll display.
All the side buttons work and control the AC. You can also touch the screen to bring up the AC controls.
Here are some more pics of the unit with Google Maps running in full screen and split screen along with various apps like the radio, VLC, YouTube Music, Google Chrome, Google app store and the apps/settings page.
As you can see the video works even in gear. Lastly, here is a link to a short video showing the head unit on, me turning the vehicle off, removing the key, opening and closing the door and restarting the vehicle for start up time. Sorry it's slightly shaky.
No, mine was the basic setup. The unit will work with the nav unit, it's just a different connection. All the wires come with it to match the variations including if you have a 2004 based or 2006 based nav system.
This looks incredible, glad to see it being used here, I've seen them used overseas but support is way better over there. Keep us posted on how this holds up!
Also, looks like a new purchase, if so, congrats on it. McGrath is a pricy dealer in my area but they do sell some top shelf examples.
Looks great!
It is interesting that you mentioned that this unit has the harness to support the factory camera. I have recently bought a Lexus RX350 2007 and been looking at these Android units, but most of them say they dont support the factory camera.
I found 2 units and both sellers confirmed they support the AC without requiring the original control board and factory camera. Not sure yet which one I should get:
I just installed the same PX6 in my 2005 Lexus RX300. Everything works great except the airbag light is on. Is there a way to remove the airbag light? When I first installed the PX6 I did not install the harness for the top OEM plug near where the 8" GPS monitor used to be. That may have set off the airbag light. I would appreciate any help on correcting this issue. I contacted customer service and they have helped me resolve all the other issues I had.
