Engine (I think) ticking sound at low RPM
Hey folks,
I’ve read a bunch of similar posts but can’t seem to figure out if I’m experiencing the same “healthy” injector noise or something more serious. My 2004 Rx330 developed a strange engine noise. I have not noticed this noise previously, and it started after I had it in for a upper and lower intake gasket fix. There was a coolant leak, so they went ahead and fixed that, and during the fix they identified an engine knock sensor was failing and replaced that as well. Ever since then I’ve noticed a significant “clicking” when idling.
the clicking is present on cold start. It’s unrecognizable when commuting, but anytime I’m stopped in traffic or parked I can hear it distinctly. It’s loudest in the cabin, and seems to originate near the passenger side rear engine. When outside the car, it’s there if you listen for it, and with the hood open it’s evident but not comparable to inside the car. I’ve not noticed any significant loss of responsiveness, and no lights/codes are on.
As far as I can tell, the sound is consistent anytime I am at low RPM (at a stoplight, on start, and after the car has been at temperature for a significant time and I park).
the odd part is that I experienced a similar sound with the loaner the dealership gave me, but I had not ever heard a similar sound in my vehicle. Any ideas?
