Car in great condition with 148K miles. I am wondering if in the old days with timing belts, more often than not, the water pump was replaced along with the belt? And then they got rid of the belt so those of use with timing chains and higher mileage can expect the pump to go at some point down the line. Not a mechanic, so wondering about average cost. Is there an average cost?

It certainly could be time to replace the WP. But I'd first rule out all the belt pulleys.
You just got the car? Congratulations. It's a nice sled; I have an 09, myself.
If it was my new car, I'd remove the belt and give all the pulleys the wiggle-and-spin test. And check the belt for cracks and tears while you're at it.
Actually, the first thing I'd do is retrieve all the Service History I could. "Lexus Drivers" provides whatever dealer service info they have for free when you sign up.
Or Carfax, if you don't mind paying. But that's not always a complete history.

One of the reasons I bought the car is that had a single owner and a file of every service record ever done on it; those mostly at the local dealership. All services done on time with religious regularity. Every major 10K interval service done at the dealer, 5K oil changes at owner's favorite local tire shop. I was so stoked at the condition of the car, having all the service records, my own test drive and what I thought was a more than fair price that I bought it without having a pro look at it. Now after the purchase I am noticing a few flaws and hoping this does not turn into a disaster.

The 2gr's have a mechanical noise vs the 3mz's......Three chains & roller rocker arms in a aluminum engine have a mechanical noise vs the 3mz's which use a t/b which is quieter running......The mechanical symphony is what I'm used to as I've had a couple solid roller cam, roller rocker engines.......
