09 RX350 Hesitation when accelerating
Hello, I have read many posts on hesitation when coming out of a turn etc. My 09 RX350 has 155,000 and I found out it has the original spark plugs. I will get them changed asap. But I also read that maybe have the computer updated to change the input sensors in the transmission.
Questions:
1.Is there a way to check an if an update the applied?
2. Can I do the update? Obviously if I had a computer.
3. Would a dealer know the "Fix" for this issue. It seems Common.
4. Is driving in "S" Mode really what drivers are doing?
Any guidance would be appreciated. I read a lot of posts but some are very old so I am wondering if by now what is the best option for a "Fix"
Thanks

I would turn off VSC and see if the hesitation is gone. The VSC system for our cars is god-awful and will cut power in such a way that it does more harm than any good it can provide for the driver. If it still happens, I would clean throttle body, MAF and try running a can of injector cleaner before an oil change. My RX had some hesitations when I first got it as it was pretty clogged up.
There is an “update” for the 5-speed trans to try and correct shift points and gear hunting. My RX doesn’t have this “update” and shifts fine, however I have heard mixed results of this update and have heard people complain about jerky shifting after. I checked at work with the VIN and saw that it had not been done.
You could probably do the update if you had Toyota Techstream, however I’m not sure how it is applied as I never looked into it. I would do it as a last ditch effort and only if I knew I could reverse it as well.

There should be a T/C off button on the lower right side of your dash on the driver’s side, it’s a little hidden but you’ll be able to see it outside of the car if you look down near where the center console starts. It’s beside the TPMS reset light off to the right.
Hold it down for 5 seconds while stationary and VSC will be turned off.

I'd swap out the plugs for Denso irdiduims......It does make a difference even w/ 50k on the pllugs.

Start with replacing the 155K plugs. I bet the gaps are way over specs. That puts a strain on the coils. The throttle intake can be cleaned at the same time if you access the plugs by removing the intake plenum. If going via the wipers, you can hold off for now.
You should feel a difference with new plugs.
Next, clean the MAF. It’s super easy. Sensor is on air duct from air box to throttle intake. Has one electrical connector and, I, believe, one bolt. Use special MAF sensor aerosol cleaning spray. Many videos on how to do this.
Then clean the intake, if not done with the plugs.
I dont know anything about re-flashing the transmission, only that it is an option that can address some tranny issues sometimes.

There are many things that could cause hesitation while accelerating, examples
Clean MAF sensor (as several other members Men) Check the Air filter, replace PVC valve, when you get the spark plugs replaced it would be a good idea to have the Ignition coils replaced to, especially the back 3 by the firewall, put some Fuel system cleaner in the gas tank, have the throttle plate cleaned
You may consider doing a ATF fluid drain and fill

Guess it's time for a throttle body cleaning and another seafoam intake treatment.
All the other stuff on ist has been done in last 2 years.

1. I really wish Toyota installed replaceable Fuel Filters on these cars.
2. I trust the quality of gasoline I buy less and less.

Went out yesterday and did a couple pulls to get the RPMs up to 4-5K.
Seems to help some on rough idle.
All my trips are short and under 4-8 miles a few times a week.
Thinking I don't drive the car enough to keep all the cob webs out maybe.
