I always use a manual vacuum pump to extract the sump oil from my RX.
Inserted down the dip tube, it works fine, removes all the oil and is much less messy than dropping the sump plug.
Last time I did an oil change using the pump, I removed the sump plug afterwards as a "peace of mind" check and no oil came out, so the vacuum pump works as designed!

The sump [reservoir] is designed to capture the heavier particles at the bottom. The internal oil pump sucks in oil a bit above the bottom. With an external vacuum pump you will not be able t recover the bottom layer. When you drain out [with the vehicle level or better still with a small tilt towards the drain plug, you get the bottom layer. Granted the next level getting more out would be to remove the sump. Rx provides reasonable clearance to stick and access revery oil pan and with long arms you need not crawl under.

If you rack on miles at a fast rate, vacuum pump may be good enough. But once a year drain the oil through the drain plug. YMMV

Like mentioned above, the top down suction method works, but tend to leave more oil in the pan unless you can move the tube around the pan to get all the oil out.

Pulling the drain plug and tilting the vehicle back(lifting the front end) is the easiest and best method to drain out most of the oil in the pan since you have to crawl under the car to remove and drain the oil filter anyway.

Again, both methods will work just fine. I use the top down suction method for my gas powered lawn mowers oil changes.
