Non-OEM coolant brand?
Hi, guys
So I think my '10 RX350 is due for a coolant change. The dealer last changed it 5 years ago and used their Toyota long life antifreeze.
I'd like to perform my own service and change the coolant myself.
Prestone brand strongly claims their All-vehicle (10 year) OAT coolant it is totally compatible on any vehicle and with all and any other brand coolant including pink and red Asian stuff.
Has anyone here successfully used this Prestone brand coolant in their RX engine ?

No one can confirm compatibility unless they mix coolants and wait 5+ years to see the results. Dunno about in your area but here Toyota coolant is less expensive than from the auto parts store.

You'll never get all the old coolant out unless you dilute over and over again with water. But then you'll be leaving some water in the system. If you want run a long term experiment and possibly save $10 then go for it.

Very good thoughts... but it's not a matter of saving a few bucks: dealer is a long drive away and they are currently back ordered.
So the local ads for Prestone caught my eye. I have not run across any anecdotal evidence that this brand of coolant has been problematic with any application.
My plan is to dump the coolant via the 2 engine block drains and the rad petcock.
Will that not purge all of the old stuff?

It is not worth doing all of that and you may never get the engine drains open. The Toyota coolant is so good you do not need to flush. Just drain the radiator and fill it all back up with Toyota Long Life. You will have replaced over 80% (guessing) and that is good enought to preserve your engine and just call it a day. That is basically what the Car Care Nut says on his YouTube channel and he is a Toyota Master Tech. You can order the Toyota stuff online from Amazon or elsewhere, or a Toyota dealer and some good independent car parts places carry it. It is the only thing you should use. Be sure to properly bleed the cooling system according to the procedure recommended by The Car Care Nut.

Haha... yeah, haven't needed to do much work on this vehicle since I yanked it away from the dealership. Was costing a ridiculous amount for just basic servicing.
Even their Lexus valet service didn't cut it. And nope, Toyota side wouldn't look at it.
So this Japanese built RX Sport has been mostly trouble free, similar to our '95 Camry (what an awesome car that was -- also Japanese made).
Have done my own oil changes since and oh... and a complete 4 corner brake job (including rebuilding front calipers and all new discs 2 yrs ago).
Was just going through my records and oops ...I thought it was 5 years ago for the coolant change. Nope, more like 8 since the long life coolant was refreshed.
I might just bite the bullet and argh -- drive on up to The Dealer to grab a couple jugs of 50/50. Only here in Canada, it's 60/40 mix.
Yes, it does now seem a royal pain to flush the old pink and rejuice with Prestone.
And then after that I guess when it shows Prestone's green liquid, folks buying it in the future will wonder WTF

Another vote here to stick with Toyota coolant. Mixing coolant brands and types is always a crapshoot, and your chances of creating a gelling problem that can destroy your cooling system increase considerably if you do. And keep in mind that there is no such animal as "universal coolant" that is guaranteed to work with any vehicle. You play with fire if you decide to go that route.

When I had a new water pump put into my 2016 Sienna, which has the same engine as the RX, they used the NAPA equivalent coolant, and a NAPA water pump.

My gallon jug (purchased at a local Toyota dealership in November 2018) says "Toyota/Lexus 50/50 Prediluted Super Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant". It is pink in color. The part number on the label on the back of the jug is 00272-SLLC2.

Toyota Red aka Long Life coolant is still sold but has not been provided from the factory since the early 2000's. Super Long Life is used in every Toyota and Lexus made since then.
