Just bought a pre-owned 2015 RX350 with 36,000 miles. I noticed what looked like a pretty heavy repair (replace VVTI gasket) at low mileage in the Lexus service history and was wondering if anyone knows what it could have been. We love the RX but it is still in return window if this is indicative of some major issue.
Sounds like the dealership repair shop repaired a leaky VVTi sensor by only replacing the rubber o-ring(s) on the sensor instead of replacing the entire sensor. Very odd since most dealership service centers just replace the entire VVTi sensor.
Then again, it may not be a big deal as long as the owner continues to keep an eye on the situation.
The two VVT solenoid O-ring seals on my wife's 2006 Jaguar XK8 seem to last about three years. They sit there and bake on top of the engine, get hard and brittle, then begin to seep small amounts of oil (and eventually air, throwing OBDII codes P0171 and P0174 when the air seepage gets bad enough). I treat them as consumable items -- they are easily removed and replaced, and are relatively cheap (about $16 for the pair the last time I ordered them from Rockauto). Now with 126,000 miles on that car, I have never had to replace a VVT solenoid.
May be a more difficult problem on these RX350s, though.
I would be more suspicious of a 9yo RX350 with only "36,000 miles" on it. That is crazy low, unicorn-low and downright suspect.
It's possible, but extremely rare. If it's true, you have 160,000 miles of virtually trouble free driving ahead of you.
Lexus is no longer displaying the service history for 2010 & 2011 RXs on their website. I can still see it for my 2014 though. Anyone else able to try it on their end? Hopefully just a glitch with my account.
Call Lexus Corporate and ask them about it. The number is (800) 255-3987. Have your VIN in hand when you call.
There was indeed a known issue with the service history section of the website about this time last year. I was told they did some upgrades and had site issues as a result. Took them nearly a month to fix everything.
