Question 2012 Lexus RX350 squealing noise. Unable to diagnose.

Hi all,

I wanted to take a stab at asking the ClubLexus community to try to diagnose an issue I’ve been dealing with for a while now.

I tried to get the dealership to diagnose this noise I’ve been hearing for about 2 years now with no luck.

Noise only occurs around 40 mph and 60 mph - otherwise the high pitched whine isn’t audible. The whine is not affected by acceleration, gear selection, road conditions (suspension), or breaking. The noise remains in the same frequency and pitch.

Has anyone had a similar issue? What could this possibly be?

Audio Clip hosted on Reddit (may have to manually paste into browser) - audio is faint in the recording but more audible in real life. (Also really annoying)

Maybe a wind noise? Something catching the wind at speed? Or a bad door/window seal? Sunroof?

Maybe try driving steady at the most audible (noise the loudest) speed, barely crack open one rear side window, close it then crack open the sunroof, listening this whole time for a change in pitch, or volume...Make sure the fan is off, and "recirc" is selected for this... Also, with everything closed up tight, at the loudest speed, with fan on it's lowest speed(no A/C) toggle back and forth between "recirc" and "outside" air flow- maybe do this first.

FYI .... I experienced a very weird issue on a road trip recently where I had strange sounds eminating at high speeds when on the freeway. It turned out that a small twig (stick) had flown up and caught between one of the plastic panels underneath the car. This gap caused an entry point for wind that caused a harmonic vibration sound (panel hitting the frame). The only thing was this was not a high pitch sound (if it was I couldn't have heard it since I have high frequency hearing loss). Good news was once I removed the stick and the problem went away. Bad news was my teenage son refused to give me a pat on the back
