QiMox Rear Liftgate Hatch Tailgate Struts Lift Supports Compatible with Lexus RX350 2010-2015, Lexus RX450h 2010-2015 (6756,PM3066)
I just purchased a used 2013 RX450h and the first cold morning the power tailgate did not remain up. I figured they were probably the original tailgate struts which are inexpensive and very easy to install, so I replaced them with these. Could be that old struts are "binding" on closing. An inexpensive way to see if the struts are the problem, and you get new struts.
I used a 2 x 4 (and a towel to protect the tailgate) to hold it up. I removed and replaced them one at a time. If the new one did not line up completely right, I used the 2 x 4 to move the tailgate up or down and then push them on.
I removed the metal clip with a screwdriver at each end (no need to save the metal clip, the new struts already have them), I cleaned the part the new strut connects to, optional: I put a little grease in the new socket and then pushed the new strut on.

I changed the lift gate struts and it seems to have solved the reversing problem. I used aftermarket struts due to high cost of OEM
The weather has turned colder and the rear door is back to reversing for no apparent reason. Must be a temperature related problem. The rear door has its own control unit. Does anyone know if it is possible to read error codes or status of the input signals to the control unit?
I decided to try resetting the hatch and engine ECU units by disconnecting the battery for 15 seconds and reconnecting it. The rear liftgate is now working properly. Hopefully that has fixed the problem. We shall see

I love that Lexus lets you manually open and close the hatch because that's what I do about 90% of the time and I think it has preserved wear & tear on my system for more years of seamless use.
