Hi! I rebuilt my calipers last summer but I have a sneaking suspicion I didn't put the right caliper pins in the correct boots, one has a black ring on it, the other doesn't. I've looked at three videos on YT videos and it seems like the pin with the ring would go in the top of the caliper for the front and on the bottom of the caliper for the rear. Does that make sense?
To addition to the topic. I recently cleaned my brakes. so the lower pins with rubber bands are all rusty. I broke the first one. I was lazy. I had to drill it out. I moved the next ones and cut off the rubber, heated them and unscrewed them. After watching video's about sliding pins. A question has appeared. Remove the elastic bands ? trim them for compression.? Or leave it alone. With a new rubber band and clean hole and lubricant, the pins moved hard . What is your opinion gentlemen? P.S winter in Quebec Canada very hard. all parts get rust fast((

I can't make much sense out of orientation logic, but it appears all bushings are on the bottom of each caliper.

Make sure whatever lubricant you use doesn't interact with rubber. You don't want it swelling and possibly jamming things up. As far as rust, no water should be getting inside the boot to begin with. There should be no rust in there. Those pins look horrible and I would probably just purchase new calipers considering one pin snapped already and you're saying they don't move smoothly. Something is going on.
Robber Oring make move harder. I saw a video where it was removed or trimmed from the sides for a better, not too strong seal. When it enters the hole with the pin, it is slightly pressed against the trimming . and doesn't block that much. maintaining anti-vibration and sealing function .the question remains. remove. cut .lubricate? The pin does not move as freely as without an elastic band. Perhaps this is due to rust
If your brake pins are in that bad of a condition, buy some new pins. They are easily available, inexpensive and these same brakes are used on many Lexus and Toyota models.
Or just get a used caliper bracket on eBay and they usually come with the pins attached.
I had to replace the driver side rear caliper bracket on my HS250h after a pin became frozen in place. There are many used ones on eBay.
