Key fob security

In my opinion , i believe they consider the FOB as a pocket "Fuppe" for the key.
On my FX35 the key is inside, and on Lexus is the same. No more chain between remote and key. The same apply to Mercedes and Volkswagen, German cars , German word.
I might be wrong also.

My experience with S-550 benz is that car can be driven for about 3 to 4 blocks before it comes to engine stalled. i would like to point out that it was not a sudden stop, rather a slowly loosing power which gives you time to pull aside. I would know on lexus in couple weeks.

Good news for all !!! By tomorrow afternoon the question will be solved. I will pick up mine at 4 pm and this will be the first real test.
Sorry G Man, i did not want to upset you but maybe i hyper react at your comments related to engine stalled because i run out of gas. My post it was hypothetical to emphasize that it can happen to get the car stopped in the middle of the traffic for many reasons and nobody sue Lexus for that. Anyway, as i said i will know tomorrow.

I will. Thinking now, it was so simple to implement it. Exactly like the remote start.
If you step on the brake to shift in D or R , and the fob is not in the range that the car can see it, just shut the engine off. No move, no accidents, no law suit, and the most important no stolen cars , and of course lower insurance premium.
I believe, Lexus designers, should read all the comments here , then, design a new car, or improve the existing one.

I hear that if the fob leaves the car, a buzzer sounds, which should deal with this situation. Any security or convenience aspect of a car can be defeated or will pose problems in certain situations, and setting up a system where the key just has to be in the vicinity of the car to unlock doors and start the engine is just asking for it. Although I must say that those friends of mine who have such cars report no problems and they love the convenience.
So far.

Got the answer. To let somebody out while on drive, you must put the foot on the brake , and keep the car stopped. Lexus, like my FX35, key fob has a very short range area. When my car is running, and i step out of the car, the moment i close the door a small alarm, like chirp sound start to let me know that i am out of the car with the key in my pocket and the engine running. The same feature can shut of the engine.
Scenario: My foot on the brake, fob out of the car, door closed ==> engine off.
So i will call the passenger to return the fob in order to drive.

tfisher, the key must be in a certain very short range 2-3 feet to open the door, and for start even closer. On my car, if i stay outside of the door but very close to the car, and somebody is in the driver seat and try to start, does not. I must seat on the seat , with the key in my pocket to start. The range for start i believe is probably 1-2 feet.
