Just got my Lexus a couple of weeks ago. My first "luxury" car, and it is a step above everything else I've had before. Most of the gadgetry I can get for less dollars, but the overall feel, fit and finish is in a different class.
But I'm honest enough to admit that there's an element of impressing my friends that drove me towards buying a Lexus. Tell them you got a Toyota or a Nissan, and they'll say, "Okay, that's nice." Tell them you got a Lexus, and it's a totally different conversation...

The lines of luxury were pretty clear in the past but today, its pretty blurry as all cars have pretty much improved and its pretty tough to find a terrible vehicle. On top of that we have some non luxury brands making some pretty luxurious cars.
As many here have stated its a combination of factors, build, features, quality, feel, desirability, looks, options, image, service etc etc.

The same was said about Toyota some years ago. I bought an RX 350 because I wanted a crossover, but if I were in the market for a sedan I would have seriously considered the Genesis.

Sorry, Leo, that's just marketing.
A luxury item is characteristically more expensive than available alternatives, but the converse is demonstrably false. Expensive items are not inherently luxurious.

However, if Hyundai can continue to do well, they can be one of "lux" soon. In 1986-1989, Honda/Nissa/Toyota came out with Acura/Infiniti/Lexus. Who would believe they can manufacture the luxury vehicles?

In fact to do that you have to define what luxurious means.

I have had two new Grand Cherokees. I don’t consider it expensive. Cadillac CTS is not luxurious? I guess luxury is a perception.
