The shop never got into specifics on their methodology, but methinks they spot sprayed it a few times till they had the right tint, gun pressure etc. Just guessing though. They were / are well aware of paint thickness issues FWIW, because we had that conversation in the past too.

I would ask them about the fender. It may depend on how far the blend extends as to how they would tackle that issue, they will have to go beyond it to cover it, and they will need room to do so.

Maybe exvelocity has a better answer for you on that. I've painted about 20+ cars and even more panels in my 53 years, but never did it for a living.

Would I have better luck with color match if I had them get OEM paint, the exact same used by the factory? Or is this even possible? By factory pack do you just mean using the color code and not custom modifying? Because if that's the case, I think that's what they did.

They likely did that last time, most shops do that with late model vehicles, and as you now know, it still doesn't mean It'll be a perfect match. Too many variables. I know that in the story about the SC430, they used a 'factory pack'. No guarantees.

As exvelocity mentioned, they have to monkey with technique, compressor/ gun settings etc. and find a better match that way. Of course, they CAN get lucky with the paint mix they obtain, right out of the can....it would probably be the exception though, rather than the rule.

Since we are basically now repainting an entire side of the vehicle, it seems like a close match should be good enough. The only place on the RX where the side panels meet anything else on the same plane is the bumpers. The hood, roof, and rear panels could be slightly different and I don't think it would be noticeable. The most important thing for me is for everything on that side to match, i.e., no mismatched panels. Of course it would be nice if the color was closer to the bumper color that I have now!

Default Clear Coat or No Clear Coat on Obsidian Black?

Hi, I have a 2010 RX 450h, in obsidian (black). I've seen conflicting info around the web about whether Lexus obsidian cars have a clear coat. It seems that maybe at one time they used just the color coat, without the clear. I'm pretty sure mine has clear because I've never noticed any color on towels while cleaning. Can someone give me a definitive answer on this? Thanks.

Obsidian (212) definitely has a clear coat. It is Black Onyx (202) that is still unclear as to whether it does or not.

Have you seen this?

Interesting reading, but may not clear up your question. Although I'm 100% sure my Obsidian Black 2010 RX450h has a clear clear coat on top of I-have-no-clue underneath. Some where under that clear is Obsidian Black.

Default Repaint RX 450h or Not? New photos!

So I had nearly the entire passenger side of my 2010 RX 450h repainted recently. Most who have seen my other thread agree with me that the color on the panels is a bit mismatched, with the rear door being slightly darker. (See https://www.clublexus.com/forums/aut...-opinions.html)

Some suggested to clean up the car and take photos with a better background, so here they are below. The car definitely looks a lot better and the color differences are much more subtle. But there are differences. The body shop has offered to do a repaint, and I'm trying to decide if I should go for it.

So what do you all think after looking at these new photos? Should I get the repaint and risk something else going wrong (this has been a long odyssey of bad luck already) and further increase the paint thickness on that side of the car, OR leave well enough alone because the match is pretty darn close and maybe, just maybe most people won't even notice? (these photos are the ones that show the mismatch the WORST).

Thanks for your opinions!

Judging by the background scenes,it seems the front door is a bit cloudier than the rear door. That doesn't make sense if they blended in the panels with the paint work.

In this pic the front door doesn't look as black. It's not too bad but I'm OCD with my vehicles.I'd get it painted again.

The rear door does look darker, I would just be worried that a repaint would make more panels looks miss matched.

What's a little more paint. If you leave it alone people will know it's been repainted and if you put more paint on they will know. I would go for the visual. You are going to have to look at it everyday and it will remind you.

If it shows up in pictures then it is noticeable. I do see the difference.

Good Luck
