10k oil change vs. severe service
#16
people...please do take the time and read the literature that came with the car...
Lexus includes a booklet called maintenance schedule with every set of owners manual...
what need to be done at each 5k interval is clearly stated within the maintenance schedule...

I cannot beleive I can go 10k before a change maybe I am just to old school but 10k seems like to long no matter what additves are in the oil I have 12k now and and am not sure if I can go that long I always changed my oils in past cars ay 3 to 4 k the oil was always clean on the dip stick I felt this was better then any insurance I could buy for engine protection. I know of two cars that I have had in the past that went almost 170000 before the bodies just went an 89 olds and a 91 ford The dealer told me do not worry if anything goes wrong its on Lexus but I would rather not have any problems no matter who is responsible What do You think?

if you are worried, spend a little money and have your oil send in for analysis
the 3000 miles oil change is a thing of the past, most cars today only need oil change every 5000 miles if use conventional mineral oil, since our RX now uses full syntheic oil, 10000 miles is not a stretch..btw..euro cars has been using 10000+ miles interval for ages and engines on cars from MB/BMW are even more complicated/higher performance than our RX..

Car manufactures are trying to lower the cost of ownership so that's why you see OCI's so high now.
personally if I bought the car get the oil tested. If its leased just do what Lexus tells you to do.

Unless you're driving a NYC cab or I should say driving like one, I don't think anyone would really have a severe service type vehicle. The dusty hot conditions of the desert Southwest, in a city, would qualify more based on every manual I have read. Even so, with this synthetic oil our dealer recommends every 10k oil changes. Only thing that would put it into severe category really would be frequent towing. Perhaps I put too much stock into what the dealer says...

Where does is say that the RX uses synthetic oil?
This is from the online Owner's Manual:
Engine oil selection
“Toyota Genuine Motor Oil” is used in your Lexus vehicle. Use Lexus approved “Toyota Genuine Motor Oil” or equivalent to satisfy the following grade and viscosity.
Oil grade: ILSAC multigrade engine oil
Recommended viscosity: SAE 0W-20; SAE 0W-20 is the best choice for good fuel economy and good starting in cold weather. If SAE 0W-20 is not available, SAE 5W-20 oil may be used. However, it must be replaced with SAE 0W-20 at the next oil change. The 0W portion of the oil viscosity rating indicates the characteristic of the oil which allows cold startability. Oils with a lower value before the W allow for easier starting of the engine in cold weather.
The 20 in 0W-20 indicates the oil viscosity when the oil is at its operating temperature.
An oil with a higher viscosity may be better suited if the vehicle is operated at high speeds, or under extreme load conditions.

I don't believe any company makes a 0w20 that isn't synthetic.

I know 0w30 is a synthetic.I posted about 0w20.
I'd like a heavier oil and may go with a 0w30 synthetic and probably Amsoil which I've used before.
I believe the only reason a 0w20 is recommended is to squeeze out a couple of tenths of a miles to get that CAFE rating up a bit.
Is a 0w20 conventional oil available?I don't think so and Toyota 0w20 is a synthetic oil.

The same 2GR-FE engine on our 2007 Camry V6 SE uses 5w-30 conventinal oil, so I would guess 0w-30 should be no problem, but of course, you will suffer a bit as far as gas mileage wise...

I bought a used 09 Rx 350 just off lease. Took it in for a oil change and they voided the warranty due to Gel in the engine.....
30k and the vehicle is now worthless. Now burns 2 quarts every 500 miles. No help from Lexus. Currently parked in my garage rusting away. I will never buy another Toyota product again. Change the oil and document it....every 5k or less if you can afford it.

When leasing some people don't care about maintenance.
If you bought from a Lexus dealer, certified?
