Why if you shift gear to S-mode - it's always set on 4th gear ?

Default Why if you shift gear to S-mode - it's always set on 4th gear ?

Ride 2010 RX downhill: Set gear to steptronic. It switch itself to 4th gear - really bad if I ride on 6th. Engine revs to hi RPM. If I set 3rd or 2nd gear - no effect - to hi RPM and it's not breaking by engine.
Even if I start to ride steep downhill on low speed (2nd gear) - move shift to steptronic - it switch to 4th gear. I manually move it to 2nd - no effect - car start to accelerate downhill and engine revs to hi RPM and it's not breaking by engine - like engine/transmission not hold the car.

What am i doing wrong ?

Any other car behave differently - shift to steptronic - it remains on the current gear.

Best regards
Eugene

The Lexus system is such that when you see a 4, the maximum gear it will use is 4. Etc with the other gears. However, if the car feels that it cannot shift that low (as in you are on the freeway and you want to shift to 2nd) it wont let you. It will always default to 4th gear so that it doesnt damage the transmission. 4 is pretty much perfect for highway passing, and then you can shift lower as need be. Going down a hill, you should be on 2nd gear and it should do some braking

I noticed the same thing and always wondered the same thing. Why wouldn't it stay in the same gear at the same rpm? Guess nothing is perfect, and at least it isn't something that I use very often.

Maybe the 4th gear doesn't damage the transmission if accidentally shifted when moving and give sufficient torque when starting from stop...
