Question Mileage Improvement.

I notice a lot of concern about the MPG obtained by the RX. I need some input from the forum. The plastic shroud that covers the radiator, horns and the air intake system provides an opening in the shroud for the air intake funnel that is smaller then the opening of the air intake funnel. At it’s widest point, the air intake funnel measures 9 3/8”X 1 3/8”(12.89 square inches) where the opening in the shroud measures only 8 ½”X 1/1/8” (10.6 square inches). I noticed this the first week I had my RX and got out my Dremel with a sanding drum and widened the opening to match the size of the air intake funnel. I usually average 24 MPG at 70 MPH, which seems better then most. Since I did this the first week I had the RX, I did not notice what my mileage was so I am not sure if I improved my MPG by opening the hole in the shroud. If someone else tries this, let us know. :

you didn't really make tunnel any larger by creating larger entry point. instead you just created more surface area for dirt to make it inside. if you want more "air" you should try drop-in K&N [they don't make one yet] or buy/fabricate a real cold air intake.

Not being an engine mechanic, could you explain in not too technical terms how increasing intake diameter improves mileage? Give a set displacement (boreXstroke), isn't that the limiting factor on the amount of air in taken? Or is it larger opening, less resistance, less power required?

Thanks for edifying me.
