best is to follow direction that came with the molding. in general when adding side or long moldings, use painters tape to set the "guidance" line. once you have the height and level you want, put the molding on using the "guidance" line so it will come out perfectly straight. this is the method used in bodyshops when putting back molding, emblem, and etc.
