2010-up US RX's should all be hard drive based. So no DVD to change.

I had been looking to update my nav system for a while. I was completely frusterated with the prices. I thought about going with an after market system but found an ad on craigslist for update disc's for $50.00. I was skepticle but purchased the disc anyway. I received my disc in the mail last week and works great. I will be getting my updates from this website from now on. I'm not sure if this is ok to post but the website is navi disc dot com

All Lexus vehicles in the United States 2010 and newer use a Hard Drive navigation system. The dealer must install the nav update because there is a pin code on the thumb drive that the update is on. You also have to have tech stream access in order to allow the usb to download the information. It isn't as simple as everyone thinks. You don't just plug it in and click "ok" and it's done. I agree that it *should* be that easy, but it isn't. It sometimes takes technicians 45 min to an hour to program those. The updates are available for $199 from Lexus. It's the labor charge to have it installed that increases the price.

I received an email that the 11.1 update is available for $169 now. I have an '04 LX 470. Will it be of any benefit? The system is pretty useless most of the time anyway, so why update?

The above link shows the area updates from the 2010 to 2011 version for generation 4 systems. I can only imagine that the amount of updating since 2004 (with additional annual updates) is substantial for the majority of large towns/cities. It really depends on whether you use NAV that much and which parts of the country you use it. I sure would not update each year for my needs, but I sure would update if the system was 7 years old.
