I have the Obsidian Black, I bought it used (2010) and I don't notice any paint chip problem but I am not in a climate where I would endure hailstones either.

I have some. The more you travel on highways, the more you're prone to having one. Unless you have the clear coat.

I've use the chip filler from drcolorchip.com on my previous car and it covered the road rash quite a bit. I'm buying some for my Obsidian black 450h. You should check it out.

Well its not noticeable until you take a closer look less than 1ft away from the surface.I lIved in condo , so I walked around at the parking lot and checked the other 3rd gen RX's hoods ..... it seems every rx's not only black having paint chips and even the other lexus model like IS, ES and LS . I saw one of my neighboor just purchased the ES 3 months earlier than me, he got a lot paint chips on the hood.

I'm planning to have it repainted next spring , and put a clear bra. what do you guys think?

ps : i always stays in the speed limit , never tailgate and always try to avoid gravels road / behind trucks

I think he means clear bra. The first week I got my Stargazer black RX I got the clear bra on the hood. I wanted to get the front bumper too but I didnt want to shell out the cash. My reasoning is that bumpers are usually repainted often from small accidents but the hood never really gets replaced unless you have a full collision.

When Im on the highway, I cut a few lanes away from large pickup trucks and those semi trucks and construction trucks are the worst.

Clear bra helps a lot. I made sure I added it on my tungsten pearl 450h after my millenium silver 330 took quite a beating. Like X said, color has nothing to do with it. Well maybe other than making it more noticeable.

If you even look at Lexus paint the wrong way it chips. My ES has tons of chips on the hood and on the lower part of the front bumper due to extensive highway driving over the last few years. A quote to repaint the hood and bumper (and blend in the fenders) with Starfire Pearl came in around $2,500.00 which was a bit much IMO.

I'm picking up a 2012 Stargazer Black RX in a couple of hours. I am having Rock Guard protection film installed today before I even drive it off the lot. RG seems a bit thicker than the stuff Lexus puts on and I am also getting the full front bumper and mirrors done as well. Lexus only puts their film on a small front portion of the hood. My wife has RG on her 2011 Volvo C70 and, IMO, it was a worthwhile investment. Granted it will get dinged up as well but spending another $500-600 in 4 or 5 years is better than the alternative of repainting.

Repainting your car from rock chips can go under your insurance without raising your rates because it is not collision. This falls under Comprehensive and people usually have a low deductible with that part of coverage

I had a 2008 IS350 before my RX - lots and lots of paint chips. So when I ordered our RX I had the clear bra put on before it left the lot - I must say that it doesn't clean up very well but at least the paint is safe from chips.

Have to be careful going down that road. I know a couple of folks who tried that and got dropped from their carrier for attempted insurance fraud. If you can successfully argue it was a dump truck full of stones and one instance that caused the damage then fine but chips in the paint fall under normal wear and tear for most insurance carriers.

interesting. I got a rock that cracked my windshield and that was covered under comprehensive. I assume it is the same principle with paint.

Just traded my 2004 RX Obsidian and had absolutely no chipped paint on the hood. Guess I was lucky.
